Wish You Were Here is best enjoyed by those who are big fans of the actors involved or love any sort of strangers in a strange land flick.

InWish You Were Here , two couple take a trip from Australia to South - East Asia on holiday - but only three of them return . Dave Flannery ( Joel Edgerton ) and his wife Alice ( Felicity Price ) have two children ( and one on the means ) - so for them , coping is a must . Alice ’s younger sister Steph ( Teresa Palmer ) is left worry about the fate of her missing gallant , Jeremy ( Antony Starr ) , with nary a soul to lean on for support .

As the toll of that terrible trip wears on the trio , arcanum from the past get to surface , point towards despicable truths that none of them may be ready to face .

Wish You Were Herehas a strong cast , an interesting enough premise and competent direction all going for it ; however , the script and structure of the film are not well   conceived   and as a result , the movie   is fairly obvious and gimmicky in its procession of scarlet herring moment , culminate in a lukewarm climax .

This import is the feature debut of Kieran Darcy - Smith , who starred alongside Edgerton in films likeThe Squareand the Oscar - nominatedAnimal Kingdom . Darcy - Smith also co - wrote the film with leading lady Felicity Price , and while the intent was admirable , the pic ’s flashback narrative social organization fails to leave room for compelling tension or even a bit of surprise . From a very other scene there is clear thought of what reply wait at the end of this mystery ; unfit yet , the trail of red herring to get said answer is like see a highlighting reel of every mystery pic cliche you could venture just from reading the film ’s premise .

To their credit , the actors all put in convincing execution and carry off some tense dramatic moments very well . damage ( whose case is pregnant throughout ) is peculiarly good , while the always - reliable Edgerton carries one the film ’s more superimposed and tricky character arcs with commitment and understated gusto . Palmer , for her pocket-sized part , is magic and endearing and holds her conclusion of the drama ; on a bit - to - bit quality degree , Wish You Were Hereis somewhat solid , though that ’s about the best thing to be said about it .

Darcy - Smith ’s direction is technically sound - peculiarly the early scenes of South East Asia ( including a fantastic travel montage ) . The Asiatic portion of the motion picture are pretty memorable and often gorgeously take ; the domesticated setting back in Australia   are whole as well , though there are some questionable lingering photographic camera angle during some of the domesticated scene of dramatic dialogue . Again , it ’s the editing and social organization of the moving picture ( the " telling " of the story , as it were ) that is concentrated to overlook - as are the gimmicky red herring the film considers " twirl . " The hope of secret and thrills demonstrate empty , the drama feels vacuous as a result , and it ’s only the strength of the character and the intrigue of an exotic venue that make the journeying at all interesting .

In short , Wish You Were Hereis well enjoy by those who are handsome fans of the thespian affect or fuck any sort of " strangers in a strange farming " flick ; it wo n’t be at all satisfy to those looking for a potent psychological dramatic play / mystery .
