The guys over atColliderwere see a press outing forWatchmenrecently and made the savvy move of asking director Zack Snyder some pointed questions about what fans can expect to see from theWatchmenDVD / Blu - ray when it is release this summer - probably some time in other August .
Up until now there ’s been unofficial conjecture that theWatchmenDVD / Blu - ray would have an extended cut of the moving-picture show – one that possibly includedTales of The Black Freighter , Watchmen ’s animated tale - within - a - story , interwoven with the live - action movie much as it was in the original graphic novel .
Well now Zack Snyder has confirmed on the dot what theWatchmenDVD / Blu - ray will and will not feature , so if you want to know just how much extraWatchmenyou’ll be puzzle for your buck , jibe out what Snyder had to say :
Collider : What is the final running time on the videodisk and what can fans look forrard to ?
Zack : The final running time without the Black Freighter is 3 hours and 10 minutes .
Collider : When you say the Black Freighter , so you ’re go to put in some of the animated bits ?
Zack : No . The Black Freighter version of the movie , which we call the final cut or the ultimate cut – it has a marketed name that I do n’t know exactly what it is . That edition of the movie , because when we were up there we physically shot the in ’s and out ’s , prospect at the newsstand that go into the motion picture . There ’s like scenes where our characters pass the newsstand and then we pick up activity at the newsstand and it gets us into the Black Freighter….with snapshot that go into it and it comes to life and you follow the Black Freighter story and then come back into the picture show . That translation of the movie is the director ’s cut with the Black Freighter intercut . That interlingual rendition sort of trace the structure of the Black Freighter that ’s integrated into the comic Bible … So that version is the 3 hour and 25 minute variation . So you have all those in ’s and out’s … but the managing director ’s cutting off includes the Hollis death poppycock , that ’s just a lot more connective tissue paper … it ’s arduous for me to even remember on the button what ’s in it . But it ’s just a tidy sum more .
Collider : So let me ask you , is there footage that is n’t start in this theatre director ’s cut that ’s sit on the by-line … or is this really everything ?
Zack : It ’s really pretty much everything . The 3 hr version is pretty much everything . There was very small that we pip that I did n’t care or use .
So if you ’re not absolved : the DVD / Blu - ray will come in two versions . One is a theatre director ’s cutting off that is 3 hours 10 minutes , have scenery shorten from the 2 minute 36 hour theatrical release ; the other version is the 3 hr 25 minute " ultimate cut " that will have the conductor ’s weakened footage as well as intercuts back and off betweenWatchmenandTales of The Black Freighter .
I ’m surprised that the " ultimate " cut only runs 15 minutes longer than the director ’s cutting . Is the stand - alone version ofTales of The Black Freighterthat is being released on March 24 , 2009 , function to feature scenes that WON’T be include in the " ultimate cut"WatchmenDVD / Blu - ray ? It surely seems like it . Damn , that entail I ’ll have to watchTales of The Black Freighterif I want to get the wholeWatchmenexperience . dodgy move , Warner Bros. Slick move indeed …
Also , nobody remark it in the Collider audience , but what about the Hollis Mason documentaryUnder The Hood ? It ’s going to be featured on theBlack FreighterDVD / Blu - ray but it looks like it ’s not snuff it to be splice into the " ultimate cut " ofWatchmen . That ’s kind of a pull : seeingUnder The Hoodmixed in with the theatrical film was something I was sort of seem forwards to – even more than theBlack Freighterscenes …
Before their time was up , Collider also managed to snag a few citation about the upcomingWatchmenDVD / Blu - ray of light from Debbie Snyder , Zack ’s wife and one of the producer ’s of the film :
Collider : What is come on the DVD ? Is there a theatre director ’s undercut ? A separate theatrical cut ?
Debbie Snyder : They ’re all done because we had to finish up them all at the same time . We have the 3 minute director ’s cut which will be released at the first dismissal of the DVD … which will belike be around Comic - Con of this year .
Collider : Can I inquire you , is there go to be a theatrical undercut and a film director ’s cut on the same DVD or are these disjoined videodisk ?
Debbie : I think on one of them , I do n’t know if it ’s the Blu - ray , I think it does exist together . But do n’t defend me to it . We also did the craziest affair ever called “ The In - Movie Experience ” for Blu - ray which I ’ve never seen before … where Zack really … it ’s like a director ’s commentary but it ’s him and there are all these box and they ’ll play the pic and he ’ll orient to a scene and they ’ll deconstruct the setting on all these monitors behind him where you could see the gullible screen version of it . Or if it ’s Dr. Manhattan you may see some great effects . It ’s kind of like “ Minority Report ” as it feel very futuristic . And then there will be , I consider , in the fall the Ultimate Watchmen cut off which will have the Black Freighter ribbon through the cinema which include the In and out that we film at the newsstand so that ’s pretty fun . And another affair is we terminate all the versions and it was an enormous amount of money because of Dr. Manhattan . Because if you think about it , it was an time of day difference between the theatrical variant , so it ’s a lot of ocular effects on Dr. Manhattan and we finished it at the same tone so we were really excited that they let us do that .
Whoa , that " In - Movie Experience " sound crazy futuristic . So the first reading of theWatchmenDVD / Blu - shaft of light ( featuring the theatrical cutting and the 3 hr 10 minute film director ’s cut ) will hit stores in tardy July , around the timeSan Diego Comic Conkicks off . The 2nd version of the DVD / Blu - ray ( feature the director ’s cut of the film tie with theBlack Freighterscenes ) will reach stores in the tumble of 2009 , date TBD .
