Screen Rant ’s Vic Holtreman reviewsThor

While I supposeFast Fivehas claimed the early bird form of address of the cinema that kicked off the U.S. 2011 summertime movie season , Thoris starting off what will be a summertime heavy with superhero plastic film . The question on everyone ’s mind is will it start thing off with a strike or a whimper ?

Overall the history is jolly straightforward : Thoris the best-loved son of Odin over crony Loki , Thor is not shy about his position ( poor self - esteem is NOT one of his problems ) , he disobeys his father , bringing risk to Asgard , is banish , and must somehow become " worthy " to retrieve his place ( and power ) in the kingdom .

How Rachel Zegler’s

Banishment post Thor ( Chris Hemsworth ) to Earth - specifically to the outskirt of a very small town in New Mexico and into the company of Jane Foster ( Natalie Portman ) . Jane is an astrophysicist whose research lies outside the mainstream - she ’s a morsel of a destitute flavor ( for a scientist ) . work with her is a veteran scientist    played byStellan Skarsgårdand a young , annoyingly goofy assistant played byKat Dennings . They get upon the   comparatively de - powered Thor and ca n’t seem to separate themselves from his troupe .

Thor ’s comer was followed by that of the mighty Mjolnir , his magic trick - imbued ( or here , in the film , more science than magic ) hammer . Mjolnir come to the attending of S.H.I.E.L.D. and our best-loved valet de chambre in black , Agent Coulson ( Clark Gregg ) .   Mjolnir can only be lifted / used by those who are worthy , and due to his being throw out , Thor is not able to retrieve it from the chemical compound besiege it .

Meanwhile , his chum Loki ( Tom Hiddleston ) is in Asgard and up to no good . He finally fork over a subject matter to Thor that leaves our erstwhile submarine completely dishearten and resigned to his fate - to live out the rest of his liveliness as a mere mortal on Earth .

The film has two very distinct personalities : Asgard ( and the celestial kingdom ) - and Earth ( specifically , small townsfolk New Mexico ) . When the cinema is in Asgard and points beyond , it is completely piquant and gripping . charge about how dizzy the costume / armor looked in early photos will vanish , as they attend like they whole belong . While there is a bit of humour , there is no tongue - in - cheek to be found in these off - world locations , and I for one was very thankful for that .

Asgard is where the movie really shines , and it is there that Tom Hiddleston , as Loki , steal the film . Director Kenneth Branagh coaxes a nuanced performance from him that is very far from a   moustache - twirling villain . He is not just conflicted - you may in reality be tempted to take his side despite the sinister path he follows . He just does an awful caper and will probably be a lot of folk ' favourite character from the film .

Anthony Hopkins is as regal and powerful as ever - and when early on he redact Thor in his place with a mighty bellow you ’ll feel like maybe you should shut the heck up and pay aid as well . Ray Stevensonas " bulky " warrior Volstag is nigh unrecognisable under all that beard and haircloth but he plays the boisterous soldier well and with a touch of fun . Jaimie Alexanderis a believable distaff warrior   and assoil herself well - play it strong while still seeming a lady .

A contender for " favorite fibre " in the cinema will beIdris Elbaas Heimdall , the sentry and gatekeeper of Asgard . He is not on filmdom very long , but he ’s a commanding mien every time he appears . He has a regal , baronial , powerful good sense about him that require and hold your attention , and you ’ll be wish he had more concealment time in the moving picture .

And then we have the part of the story that takes place on Earth . This is where the trademark Marvel movie liquid body substance was injected into the film , and for me , much of it was excessively goofy and overuse . There were a couple of queer minute that were a bit more guarded that I relish ( a post - drinking scene between Hemsworth and Skarsgård was short , subtle and quite funny ) .

The tone for the humor in the film was adjust right from the opening , which had me groan and concerned for what might descend during the course of the movie . I set up the possible action conniption semi - ludicrous ( imagine a crack cocaine chaser wanting to labour right INTO the tornado , that also has a lightning storm happen inside it ) , and the sophomoric witticism brought to the first few scene courtesy of Dennings ' case left me insensate ( although the consultation I was with seemed to relish it ) . thing evened out over time ( gratefully ) , but still , portion of the movie that took place on Earth provide me yearning for a return to Asgard .

Chris Hemsworth in ‘Thor’ (review)

To his credit , Chris Hemsworth did a fine job playing the supremely arrogant Thor - chesty even without his super - powers . He softened by the death of the film ( a bit too suddenly , I recollect ) but he was believable on both sides of the personality slip . He was very charming even in his arrogance . Natalie Portman did n’t really have a lot to do here and seemed like she could have been represent by most any attractive untried thirty - something actress - nothing really of banker’s bill in her performance . Then again , she really was n’t move over much to do .

Asgard interior calculate amazing , although the exteriors looked a piddling to " Star Warsprequel " for my taste . The design they came up with for the rainbow bridge was both telling ( you try get a " rainbow bridge " literal ) and efficacious . Another majuscule design was that of the gateway - very visually interesting in both appearance and function . Jotunheim , the planet of the Frost Giants was fitly vast and barren , although the grotesque creature seen in the trailers looked a routine CGI - ish .

There were multiple battles throughout the film to keep legal action - fan sated , and although the final engagement on Earth seemed a bit dissatisfactory , the other battle with the Frost Giants from Jotunheim and a   last face - off in Asgard are pretty cursedly larger-than-life . Especially in the former you decidedly get a sense of the incredible power of Thor . If I have any complaint it ’s that the fight scenes were shot in that uber - vexing , finis - in , A-one - choppy - redaction style . The duskiness in some of the scenes compounded with the darkening of the 3D glass / effects made some of it front extremely murky .

Tom Hiddleston as Loki in ‘Thor’

Idris Elba as Heimdall in ‘Thor’

Speaking of 3D , while I think the concept of post - production 3-D is tremendous ( if you ’re going to make a 3D movie , inject it using 3D cameras ) , I did n’t see any of the usual telling augury of after - the - fact 3D : the back of an actor ’s fountainhead floating aside from his nerve , the look of 2D layers separated by stilted depth , etc . On the other handwriting , there ’s nothing much here to make this deserving seeing in 3D. If you may see it in 2D , I advocate you just do that instead .

For the Marvel fans , the appearance of Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye in the film seemed   superfluous - it was there more as a tie beam - in to the Avengers movie and as a small Easter egg for you . Yes , they did incorporate Thor ’s alter - ego Donald Blake into the film in a offhand and creative way - and I will not muff for you how Thor used his pounding and whether it matched his economic consumption of Mjolnir in the comics . :)

Overall , Thorwas a very enjoyable ride that combined heroic action and scene , but not at the expense of let the consultation get to know some big case . powerful now I ’d say this is probably the second best Marvel - produced superhero movie , behind the firstIron Man .
