Except for bad acting, a bad soundtrack, and a bad script, it’s not that bad a movie.
The word onThe Punisherwas not good before the picture show come out , and after it ’s exit it only got big . Forewarned is forearmed , so I pass on see it on the big screen . However … being a fan of comic record and the motion-picture show they animate , combine with the fact that I had study a routine of " Hey , it wasn’tthatbad . " post on various substance display board , I decide to add it to my Netflix queue and give it a look .
The folks on the message dining table were right , sort of . Except for the bad playacting , a bad soundtrack , and a spoiled handwriting , it ’s not that defective a movie .
The movie opens with what seems to be an illegal arms passel gone wrong . Macho posturing ensues , FBI shows up , and the " money man " for the deal , who seems to be rather green at this sort of thing , is killed . It turn out that the German arms provider with the forged emphasis is our grinder , Frank Castle ( played by the terribly miscastThomas Jane ) . Frank , it turns out , is run to move back from the FBI at the ripe previous age of about 35 . Why , we have no thought … he ’s a squealing clean kind of guy so there ’s no possibility he ’s been run down cash from drug busts . Maybe he became an agentive role at age 15 and the political science has a killer pension plan .
After this we get to meet Frank ’s married woman and son and there is a bit of time dedicate in an attempt to make us manage about him and his menage . Kind of works , but not especially well . It just all seems reasonably " displace " , and Thomas Jane ’s " kind / gentle " vocalisation seemed to me like a bad cross between Clint Eastwood and a healer . Really cringe - worthy .
It bend out that the young man killed in during the weaponry deal sting was the son of an extremely ample businessman played by John Travolta , whose riches is not all derive from sound enterprises . Travolta looks like he had fun playing the part , and as usual I savor check him on screen . It almost looked like he took his Vincent Vega character fromPulp Fictionuptown . Anyway , he does n’t take kindly to the death of his son , and his married woman even less so . While he decides to have Castle killed , the wife chimes in with the command that Castle ’s total family be execute .
Here ’s where we number to one part of the movie that I thought was a great concept … the thought of not only Castle ’s wife and son being wipe out , but his entire protracted family : In - Laws , Father-God , brothers , cousins , etc . The assassin show up at a kinsfolk reunification , the first in a few years , and they killeveryone . Of course Castle ’s married woman and boy are go out for last .
I retrieve this was a great setup for incite Frank Castle as the spirit of vengeance . Upping the ante considerably from the Batman mythos of having his parents defeat in front of him . I was also ( pleasantly ) suprised to see Roy Sheider appear briefly as Frank ’s father .
This smashing frame-up was straight off crushed when the assassins come upon Castle , shoot him repeatedly in the chest , dowse a pier in gasoline and bodge it up with Frank on it . He is blown into the sea and presumed to be dead . hour later on Frank washes ashore , is found by a local guy who the other locals believe is into Voodoo , and over a couple of calendar month is healed of his injuries .
Right there , I had a " let me get this straightforward " minute : Multiple gunshots to the chest , the concussive force of an explosion , he lies untreated and phlebotomise for hours , but a voodoo guy suckle him back to wellness without hospitalization .
From this point in time on I ca n’t serve but look at this as junk .
Cut to Castle ( who shall as yet be referred to as " The Punisher " ) set up his root of operation in an former warehouse semi - reborn to a ratty living space . Of naturally also living in the building is a hottie who for some unexplained reason is roomates with a duad of guys who look like they would still be living in their parent ’s basement watchingStar Trekif their parents had n’t complain them out . We have shots of him work up his armored car and hiding weapons all over his hold up place . I marvel why he would hide weapons everywhere if he was planning on taking the fight to the enemy , but I depart .
The cinema actually get a snatch creative in how The Punisher set things in place for part of his retaliation . Instead of a frontal ravishment , he plant seeds that would raise into mistrust between Travolta , his wife , and his right hand valet . Not a spoilt idea , but I actually thought considering the tonus of the relief of the film that it got a bit convoluted . In the end of course of action , it worked at destroying Travolta ’s family unit from within .
Finally , at the closing we got some more of what the butt consultation for this film paid to see : Stuff blowing up and plenty of high caliber gunshot . This bought the flick a few points for me , but then powerful at the end they pull way back for a completely cheesy Punisher logo scud that I ’m indisputable was supposed to elicit a collective " Cool ! " from the audience , but aim no more than a moan out of me .
I really call up that Thomas Jane was miscast as The Punisher . Sure , he was buff , but he did n’t pull off the obscure , haunted , old-hat - particular forces thing for me . He attempt to do it by talking in a semi - whisper , but it just did n’t do work . Another matter that did n’t exploit was setting this thing in Tampa , Florida . Why Tampa ? Why not just make it New York City ? That really would have meet the film much better . Sure it ’s typical , but what in this plastic film was n’t ? Oh , and I forget to mention the soundtrack … right off the commencement it sound like it came from a bad TV movie . Again here was something that if done differently could have at least made the movie play a mo well , but did n’t .
There was a germ of a undecomposed movie in there somewhere , but alas it last out buried and never saw the light of day .
