An unexpectedly smart and funny movie that will have both adults and kids laughing out loud.

I had no idea what to expect going into the CGI animated flickSurf ’s Up . I ’d visualize the trailers and they wait kind of cute … middling much what you ’d expect from a film about surfing penguins .

So imagine my surprise when I found myself express joy out loudly at the very first scene in the moving picture . :-)

Now I never sawHappy Feet , but from what I ’ve get wind about it , quite the inverse from what it ’s advertising suggested , it served more to scare away kids than to put smiles on their human face . Surf ’s Upactually deliver what you look from see the commercial message and prevue : A play , lighthearted and ( within the standard cliche paramters ) uplifting pic that both grownup and kids can delight .

Surf ’s Upis the story of Cody Maverick ( voiced by Shia LaBeouf ) , a puny penguin with sentiment of enormousness and surfing that put him on the outside of his community . The report opens with him being interview by a moving picture crew , telling the narrative of how he first meet the famous surfer " Big Z. " Buffalo Bill Cody has a huge and overbearing brother that thinks he ’s flaky , a protective and implicated mother that ’s a bit disconnected and hopes he will grow out of whatever phase angle he ’s in . Overall , the story is about how Cody gets into the big Penguin World Surfing Championship and what happens to him while he ’s there .

Along the way we meet his new ( and also an foreigner ) surfing crybaby sidekick Chicken Joe ( Jon Heder ) , Lani the cute lifeguard ( Zooey Deschanel ) , the current objectionable champion Tank Evans ( Diedrich Bader ) and old - timer Geek , played by Jeff Bridges . All the actors do a great job , and in peculiar I enjoyed the clueless everything - will - be - ok performance of Jon Heder . However I really have to single out one actor who put a big grin on my typeface every time he open up his oral fissure : James Woods as surf promoter Reggie Belafonte . Knowing James Woods from other films , it was just a joy to " see " him play this confidence trick - creative person - like but super diminuitive character with a big Cheshire cat smile . :-)

The movie combines the feel of the Graeco-Roman surfer movieEndless Summerwith the style of the original short filmCreature Comfortsby Aardman Studios , and it ’s a great combining . The interview are played direct , and view Cody earnestly reminisce and answer questions as a penguin with a surfer twang to his voice was priceless . As long as the moving picture stayed on that track , it was heavy . However afterwards on it does descend into the more distinctive liven motion-picture show convention that you would carry to find out in a kids CGI picture : Hero gets frustrated and almost sick the whole thing only to come back in the remainder and triumph . At least the triumph is not exactly what one would expect , and the movie get point for that .

In a dusty landscape Finn stares out into the distance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Having said that , even the parts where it gets more predictable are still funny and entertaining . I really enjoyed Jeff Bridges as an old , laid back surfer dude as well .

Overall , just a swell , fun movie for both kids and adult that ’ll put a smile on your face . It ’s rank PG for a couple of soft curse words but other than that I say it ’s suitable for all age .
