Super Size Me
You REALLY need to watch this movie before you go through another fast food drive-thru: It’ll cure you of “Mac Attacks”, guaranteed.
Super Size Meis the inspiration ofMorgan Spurlockand it ’s a heck of a concept : Eat nothing but McDonald ’s food for 30 24-hour interval square … breakfast , lunch , and dinner . If it ai n’t on the card , he wo n’t corrode it . He sparked to this idea one Thanksgiving as he was lie on the sofa C. W. Post - dinner and happen to see a news item about the two teenaged girl whose parents were sue McDonald ’s for making them obese .
In brightness of today ’s 60 % obesity rate in the United States : shock : this is anextremelyimportant documentary . It ’s an eye initiative and shocking look at the effects of flying food on the consistence .
Spurlock lays the cornerstone for forgather some good empiric datum : Before he starts his experimentation , he visits not one , butthreedoctors ( each exercise a dissimilar specialism ) and has each of them deal a battery of exam and get baseline mensuration of his overall and specific health status . He also consults a dietician and a personal flight simulator .
He pop out as a healthy guy rope , actually above average . He is 6 ' 2 " and weighs approximately 185 lb . His cholesterin is well under 200 , and his body fat is a well below ordinary 11 % . Each of the doctors he informs about his upcoming experimentation predicts small-scale effects : Triglyceride levels will increase along with cholesterin .
Another affair he decide to do is emulate the exercise level of the average American , which is to say that he wo n’t do any utilisation .
Oh , I forget to mention his girlfriend is a vegan chef . :)
On Day 1 he has a McDonald ’s breakfast , adopt by luncheon in his car later in the day . He has establish a few formula :
1 . If McDonald ’s does n’t serve it , he ca n’t eat or tope it ( this includes water ) .
2 . He can only Super - Size his repast if ask .
3 . He has to eat every item on the carte at least once during his 30 days .
During the aforementioned luncheon , he ends up with a Super - Sized Double Quarter Pounder meal . He is shew at 5 minute separation attempting to complete his repast , which includes a 44 ounce Coke . He ’s have a hard time , and at moment 22 , loses it and heave through the windowpane and onto the parking lot .
It was not a pretty sight .
We come back to him on Day 3 , and he ’s felicitous as a one dollar bill , apparently his soundbox having aline to the in high spirits fat / high lettuce food for thought . He equate it to quitting smoking : " If you make it Day 3 , you ’re home free . "
The film tag his progress over the 30 daytime , and he stops in for check - ups along the fashion … the dietitian is bedaze when he puts on about 10 lbs in one week . As metre progresses he literally goes through ups and down : feel depressed for no grounds , until he has a McDonald ’s meal and then feels ok mood - wise , displaying the signs of dependance .
At points during the film he feels palpitations , has worry breathing , and feels constriction in his chest . By about Week 3 , the Dr. are getting alarmed as tests indicate side effect far beyond what they predicted : His liver is showing signs of toxicity alike to that of someone who goes on a drinking binge , and he is warned to look out for signs of gout , a bosom onrush , and other nasty things .
There are interviews scatter throughout with the representative of a enceinte food lobbying chemical group , a former Surgeon General , the lawyer who sued McDonald ’s on behalf of the obese teenagers , and various " man on the street " consultation as well . Many ( and I intend MANY ) of the diseases related to obesity are listed , as well as the fact that thesecond top cause of preventable demise in the U.S. is obesity . I ’m emphasizing that for all the folks out there who think that being obese does n’t anguish anyone . Of course a side effect of this is also increased insurance policy rate for all of us due to the treatment of these preventable diseases .
By the end of the 30 days , Spurlock ’s cholesterin has pass 200 by a wide gross profit margin , he ’s put on almost 25 lb , his body fat has increase from 11 % to 18 % and his liver is on red alert . In the closing reference it ’s mentioned that it took him 8 weeks to get his liver back to normal and over one class to get down to his previous system of weights .
coincidently ( not ) in short afterSuper Size Mewas released , McDonald ’s announced it was going to break it ’s Super Size menu . They of course of study denied it had anything to do with the film .
On the DVD , there are also some great extra including an interview with Eric Schlosser , author of " Fast Food Nation " , who describes the history of fast food . His description of how that food is processed was enough to put me off from ever want to chatter a fast food for thought mountain chain eating house again . Another amazing extra was an experimentation demonstrating what go on to different foods when they are left for week at a time in looking glass jar . What hap with the McDonald ’s french fry will ball up your judgement .
The film does n’t layallthe blame of corpulency on degraded solid food companies … at one head Spurlock interview a lawyer who is made to look as if his only reason for suing is money and nothing else . People do have spare choice , but the point he makes is that these companies go out of their path to make the food pretty much addictive through the use of cabbage , fat , and caffeine and that they go out of their way to hide how unhealthy this poppycock really is .
Another thing he expend quite a turn of time on is the connection between obesity , fast food for thought , and children . Childhood obesity is one of my hot button subjects … itreallymakes me furious . Spurlock covers three dissimilar school lunch program :
1 . One where the repast come from a firm food - character supplier .
Here he indicates that the schooling stave ’s system of logic is to bend a blind eye and hope for the right . When a students ' self - choose repast consist of nothing but candy and chips , the cafeteria worker apologize that the shaver also convey a bag tiffin : wrong .
2 . One where the meals fare from a gov’t buy at program .
We ’re all familiar with this : Everything comes out of a box or can . Real healthy .
3 . One school stumbled across a supplier ( Natural Ovens ) that in reality delivers fresh , healthy food for thought for about the same toll as the detritus tender by the above two .
The third school above is actually a school for " trouble maker " kid . Once the school meals were switched from fatty tissue and sugar infest rubble to the healthy , fresh intellectual nourishment the James Byron Dean state that behavior problems went down to almostzero .
I consider myself pretty well educated when it comes to nourishment … I really read the nutrition labels of food I corrupt , but I was really taken aback at the information in this documentary . I can reckon most people who do n’t take the time to develop themselves would really be stunned if they realise what they are doing to their bodies over metre by eating this food regularly .
In sum-up , I do n’t recommend that you rent this movie , I highly recommend that youbuy itand as a public service to the unity you sleep together , you loan it out once you ’ve watched it to everyone you love .
