Lt . Commander Gen Rhys was excellent as Acting Captain of the USS DiscoveryinStar Trek : Discoveryseason 5 , instalment 8 , " labyrinth " . Rhys followed his orders to keep Discovery safe from the Breen , with the challenge of being ineffectual to drape in the Badlands . Rhys gambled that the Badlands ' plasma energies would scramble the Breen ’s sensors , and he regulate the USS Discovery into the storm . With Rhys in dictation , Discovery weather the Badlands and successfully rescued Captain Burnham , Commander Rayner , and the away team , beaming them and the final progenitor ' clew safely aboard the ship .
Star Trek : Discoveryseason 5 , episode 3 , " Jinaal " revealed that Gen Rhys is a " ship - head " who loves 23rd one C Constitution Class spaceship .

A revolving Captain ’s hot seat was a hallmark ofStar Trek : Discovery ’s first few seasons , butthe serial publication was building up two great homegrown Captains . Of course , Star Trek : Discoveryis the taradiddle of Michael Burnham earning the Captain ’s president , and " Labyrinths " cut into into Burnham ’s inner fears of not being good enough and questioning who she is if she ’s not pursue missions as Discovery ’s senior pilot .
Rhys is intelligibly quick to move up the bid track and become a Number One .
It ’s actually curious that Captain Burnham did n’t instantly deal Lt . Commander Gen Rhys to be the USS Discovery ’s Modern First Officer before selecting Commander Rayner . Rhys is clearly ready to move up the control path and become a Number One . Gen is obviously trusted to dominate the USS Discovery in Burnham and Rayner ’s absence , and he passes each exam with flying colors . Perhaps Rhys distinguish himself as Acting Captain inStar Trek : Discoveryseason 5 , episode 8 , will go to himbecoming Captain Gen Rhys some day .
