A gritty, violent, and overall impressive film that may not go over big with the general public.
Wow … where to start with this review ? To be honest I ’m still not sure exactly how I feel about it . It ’s one of those films that takes multiple viewings to really take it all in .
First off , folk , can youpleaseleave the kids at home for this one ? It ’s stag radius , and despite the use of gloss ( or more accurately the lack of it),Sin Cityis not for the young ' UN . If you simplyhaveto see this , do me a party favor and fork out a couple of bucks for the sitter , would ' ja please ?
Sin Cityis based on a serial of graphic novel indite and illustrated by the great Frank Miller . For those of you unfamiliar with the globe of funny Book , he ’s the guy that invigorated the Batman and Daredevil titles with his realistic , film noir , gamy approach to these deed of conveyance . His most renowned employment is probably The Dark Knight serial of graphic novels where he painted a picture of an ripening , vitriolic Batman live in a dark , apocalyptical future tense . This was a new take on the Batman mythos : realistic , coarse-grained , and showing the slightly psychotic side of a guy who dresses up in a batsuit to fight sorry guys in the middle of the dark .
I ’m reviewing the from the perspective of the average viewer : someone who has never check Miller ’s original adaptation ofSin Cityon report . Whereas most comical book adaptations to film go out hardcore fanboys screaming in scandalisation ( anyone remember the organic vs. mechanically skillful Spiderman webshooter debate ? ) , I smell out that this is the exclusion to the rule . Frank Miller co - train the film version of his creation with Robert Rodriguez and from what I ’ve read online , and is evident on the filmdom , this is belike the most faithful book to sieve adaption to date .
Sin City is the dark side of New York metropolis multiplied by one hundred . It ’s a dark and scary place , where an honest police detective is an endangered species , tart predominate a part of town , and high-pitched ranking religious and political figures make Saddam Hussein look like a girl spotter .
The film is actually a trilogy of sorts , take after a brief menstruum in the lives of three character : Marv ( my favorite performance in the film , bet wonderfully by Mickey Rourke ) , an almost Frankenstein - search military personnel who has almost limitless imperviousness to hurt , and cruelty against those he feels merit it . John Hartigan ( Bruce Willis ) the hard - moil honest police detective of which I spoke originally ) . And lastly Dwight ( my second favorite execution , Clive Owen ) , who almost seems to be a bountiful reincarnation of Marv .
The three stories are barely connect to each other … all they really share in plebeian is the fact that they take plaza in Sin City , and the corruption of those on gamey . We have Marv , who due to his appearance has never experienced dear or tenderness , who is on a quest for revenge when a beautiful sporting lady who gave him what he ’d never had is polish off quietly right next to him and he is framed for it . We then have Hartigan , suffering for maim the child molester / murder Word of a high ranking functionary … bourgeon and sent to clink for these crimes and to save the life of the would - be last dupe . Finally we have Dwight , a serviceman with a dark ( what else ? ) past who is out to keep the peace between the corrupt police and the hookers who have a decent life of sorts without being under the influence of panderer .
As I say , pull up stakes the kids home for this one .
The film is charge in black and whitened overall , with plash of gloss here and there : A fair sex ’s lip , her eyes , and sometimes line . One of the things that took away from this motion picture for me was trying to figure out the"why"of the usance of color … in some ways it made sense , but in others I was lost . Why was the blood in some part of the film white , in others black , and in yet others red ? Maybe I ’m not bright enough , but I could n’t tell apart the logic , beyond keeping the picture show from run into NC-17 territorial dominion from the voluminous amounts of it spilling on the screen . Another thing was the spoken and voiceover dialogue : You dead had to buy into it early , or the matter came off as a parody ( protection ? ) to film noire of the 1940 ’s . Some of it was really over the top , almost defy you to say " Aw , c’m on ! " . As to the tri - story aspect of it , I think I would have like it more if either the three stories were a number more connected to each other or if they had just concentrated full on one of them .
My scuttlebutt concerning the general populace relates to the fact that this photographic film compares to mainstream films the same mode a Picasso compares to regular oil paintings : It ’s very different , a fleck tough to get , and you ’ll either really wish it or call up it ’s eccentric .
There were good deal of well - known actors in this celluloid , although some of them were unvoiced to recognize through their prosthetic makeup . For me , the stand out was Mickey Rourke as Marv … great character and an awe-inspiring performance by Rourke . I also enjoyed Clive Owen ( rumour to be the next James Bond ) , but another one that really jump out at me was Elijah Wood as a sneaky , cannibal orca . One word for the reference and his performance : CREEPY . I do n’t know … maybe having Mrs. Henry Wood scorch into my skull as Frodo fromLord of the Ringsmade the counterpoint more intense . In any case , I was center by his public presentation .
In determination , despite a band of what I say above , if you are n’t put off by the gory violence and more nakedness than one might anticipate from this movie , artistically it has a lot going for it . I ’m giving it due to the performances and the style of the film .
