This is one of those review where I feel totally chained by the NO SPOILER dominion . After all , it ’s almost impossible to talk about Martin Scorsese’sShutter Islandwithout discussing the film in its totality . Shutter Islandisn’t one of those simple " be intimate it " or " detest it " picture show experience - this is one of those films that makes you go , " Hmmmm … "
Leonardo DiCaprio stars as Federal Marshal Teddy Daniels , a hard - tush copper who gets called out to a remote psychiatric Mrs. Humphrey Ward off the New England shoring ( I ’ll let you judge the name of the island ) . Unlike those other two volume , however , Shutter Islandis a psychological drama that is far deep and more complex . The clear-cut challenge facing screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis was how to take all the psychological part of the story and poise them with the mush mystery narration that most witness are expecting .
While the playscript managed to strike a unspoiled symmetricalness on paper , I do n’t think Scorsese was that fortunate in translate it to the screen . First , have me say thatShutter Islandis one of the most visually fat Scorsese motion-picture show that I ’ve seen sinceRaging Bull . The photography and cinematography are just gorgeous and the dream / hallucinations sequences ( which can be so lame when carry through badly ) are some of the most spectacular I ’ve seen in awhile . The passage between " the literal " and " the surreal " are clumsy and often awkward , specially as the mystery unwinds in the second and third human action . The nature of the story and the operose psychological components also affect the tempo ; even though the writer and director never lose sight of where they ’re extend , the movie itself will at long last find that way to a first - time viewer .
