Shogun
admonition : SPOILERS consist ahead for Shogun !
Summary
In a show packed full of aroused twists and turns , Shogunepisode 8 stands out as a highlight . Based on James Clavell ’s historical fable novel of the same name , the FX and Hulu show centered onKantō lord Yoshii Toranagaas he becomes targeted for death by the other brawny regents in 15th one C Japan . While he on the Q.T. plots a way to survive this death judgment of conviction and retain his office , he also build a tenuous partnership with John Blackthorne , an English maritime pilot who goes from a captive to one of Toranaga ’s right - hand men .
Shogunepisode 8 was , in particular , one of the heavier episode of the show as it picked up right after the expiry of Toranaga ’s son , Nagakado , after his failed attempt to assassinate Saeki . The Kantō lord indicate he will proceed with his surrender to Osaka , much to the chagrin of his allies , include Buntaro , who proposes to his wife Mariko that they trust suicide in objection , which she promptly pass up . This also result in the death of Toranaga ’s trusted full general and intimate , Hiromatsu , who confide seppuku in defiance of his order .
Toranaga ’s actions in Shōgun gain a new meaning on a rewatch following the major reveals from the finale , which affirm he need to become shōgun .
Unbeknownst to all except Mariko , Hiromatsu ’s death was really a plan by Toranaga to assure that his foe believed his defeat was material , still carefully plot his achiever in outwitting his opponents and at - the - time cryptic fantastic dodge . Even in venom of seemingly using both Hiromatsu and Nagakado ’s decease as part of his plans , Toranaga still seems to be rocked by each exit , with the instalment closing on the lord promising that he will not waste their deaths and the time they purchase for him .
Osei-Kuffour Jr. Had A Lot Of Japanese Experience That Made Him Perfect ForShogun
Prior to joining the FX / Hulu show , Osei - Kuffour Jr. had been steady build a resume on the small cover with the Blumhouse and Prime Video thrillerBlack Boxand head an episode ofMike Flanagan’sThe Midnight Club . His openhanded experience that finally made him the unadulterated choice to joinShogunwas actually his film schoolhouse years , which he spend in Japan , becoming immersed in the finish and cinema , much of which he lend into the production :
Emmanuel Osei - Kuffour Jr. : So actually , it ’s funny you mentioned Midnight Club . My help , director Dan Miller , was actually my assistant director on that show , as well . So , I did that about a yr and a half before Shogun , and when I first suffer him , I told him about my clip living in Japan , and how I lived there for six long time , and how I talk Japanese at an advanced degree , and how I was in sexual love with Japanese celluloid , and how everything I do is about belonging and identity . He was like , " You should really talk to the Shogun masses , because I just got employ on this show that ’s this really authentic samurai series . "
I had n’t discover about it up until that breaker point , so he introduced me to the showrunner , Justin Marks , and the manufacturer , Ed McDonnell . And yeah , that ’s how it happened . It was the most enjoyable audience I ’ve ever had on a show , because I was being myself , and I was talk about my honey for Japanese celluloid and my time there , and we were very simpatico in term of sensitivity and gustatory perception . It was a great interview .
Obviously , we had a lot of resources on that show . you’re able to see it on the screen , there ’s a bunch of attention being paid to authenticity , and that was great . I think one of the challenges on the show was the fact that every cast phallus — I would say 90 % of the plaster bandage spoke only Japanese . So , I felt like , because I speak Japanese , I was capable to pass directly with the actors and the crew member that were Japanese , and develop a rapport that was singular to me and them . I recollect having a lot of really slap-up TV small town conversation with a lot of the cast members , and really being transfer back to my time living in Japan .
In many ways , exercise on this show felt like coming rest home , because I pop out my career there . The first brusque films I made in film school were in Japan , most of my films before I come back to the States were in the Japanese language , working on a Nipponese set , sympathize hierarchy , understand the motive to fit in , understanding how to say in between the line , and becoming sensitive to what is not being said . When it come to cast or comes to producers , I remember all that stuff , just noesis of the acculturation and its sensitivity to the culture , gave me a resonance that I believe was really unequaled , and really extra with all the cast member and all the Japanese crew member .
When it came to melding his own originative vision for the show with the visual language established by the old seven episodes , Osei - Kuffour Jr. plant he was given a lot of creative exemption , ultimately turning to a few iconic Japanese movies as his reference for episode 8 :

Emmanuel Osei - Kuffour Jr. : Yeah , so just kind of give a mo of context of use , my episode amount right after the death of Toranaga ’s son , Nagakado , and so it ’s a really unexpected death that rocks Toranaga and every other unmarried member of his kindred . And one of the thing Justin told me early on is that the audience needed to finger this collective sense of grief throughout the intact kindred , and there was this weight that he want to feel throughout the entire episode , which is distinct in my installment compare to every installment before it .
So , it was not only my job to land performances from these samurai that push them to more vulnerable and aroused position , but it was also my job to find the visual words that capture that gloom that set in over Edo , which is also a place that we had n’t seen before . So , one of the references that I had specifically was Mabaroshi . Maboroshi no Hikari . It ’s Hirokazu Kore - eda ’s first feature film . Hirokazu Kore - eda is known for shoplifters , and Nobody Knows , and Like Father , Like Son . in person , he ’s a very immense influence on me as a director , so being able to use that movie was special , and the intellect I looked at that motion picture , in especial , is because that film is all about brokenheartedness .
And that film uses darkness and composition to really capture the closing off and despair that you feel during sorrow , and in a very quiet , tense , very tender way . So , I showed a slew of our consultation image to Justin , and he know it , and he gave me and my DP , Marc Laliberté , permission to go to town with that . Some other references for my episode were Harakiri , for obvious ground , but also for not obvious reasons . Harakiri is also very quiet , and the composition are very intentional , and you sense every shift when photographic camera angle change , when lens system interchange , when guesswork sizes get fuddled , you really feel it .
Because there ’s a sense of intentionality throughout that film . That ’s what I wanted to feel with this , as well , specially build up to that seppuku scene , which was the coming of my installment . The series as a whole , also really brought a raft of ocular language from Silence . And I also face at Justin Kurzel ’s Macbeth , as well , which also captured this isolation , and there ’s this loneliness that I consider Toranaga specifically experiences in this episode . But those are kind of what my visual references were for the show , for this episode , specifically .
Hiromatsu’s Seppuku Scene Held Many Deeper Layers For Toranaga
One of the bad surprise to come fromShogunepisode 8was undoubtedly Hiromastu ’s hara-kiri , give just how close-fitting acquaintance he and Toranaga were in the lead up to this moment . When it came to filming this moment , Osei - Kuffour Jr. undergo extensive preparation to capture every emotion potential for the consultation , namely the one of sadness he feel when he scan the sequence ’s script :
Emmanuel Osei - Kuffour Jr. : Yeah , so that was a special shot . It ’s one of those scenes where , when you first read the script , I call back crying , and really pay off emotional at the end of it . I did n’t expect that to happen when I first read the script . What I love to do whenever I take on any project is gaining control that feeling that I have as a lecturer , and check that I preserve that feeling for watcher , so that was a highlighting scene . But that ’s also a high spot prospect for Justin , when I finally had my first few meetings with him , it was very significant that that scene landed decent , everything construct up to that .
So I was like , visually , I kept the camera out of the path , I did n’t want to draw attention to the television camera . And a lot of the reason why that that scene turn so powerfully , in my judgement , is because the writing is striking . Toranaga and Hiromatsu , we practise the scene like two or three times before we really did it on the day . There was a lot of reworking of dialogue , there was a lot of reworking of blocking on my end to just really set apart and create a moment where I could insulate Hiromatsu and Toranaga , so when I get in their eyeline , that ’s all you see is the two of them . So , that was an knowing choice to put them off to the side like that .
Image via Hulu/FX
But , Hiromatsu and Toranaga , Nishioka - san and Sanada - san , severally , they put everything into that scene . They made certain that there was a true statement and a vulnerability to it , and it was just my job on the day to prompt them where they ’re at , and to push that Lunaria annua and vulnerability . And again , I mean this episode — no punning signify — there were a sight of tea leaf kettles simmer with every single character on the show , and it was my occupation to really get that steam to come up out and to get those good performances , and get vulnerability and get Lunaria annua and get a rawness that we had n’t seen just yet , because every single character in this sequence was shifting .
So , that was kind of what I did , I just really did n’t want the camera to be a distraction . So , again , I just die back to Harakiri , that was a huge book of facts for me . But another matter that I did , real quick , is rain . earthquake and weather become a character in the show early and after in the series , and I really felt like , for whatever reason , rain could create a sense of gloom and apprehension , and bode what would bump in this room . So , adding that was very intentional , and also during the rehearsals , really giving license to all the thespian in the elbow room , not just Hiromatsu and Toranaga , but every doer in that way to really let the secrecy be heavy . We would be patient with performances , I think that all lead to the tension , the placid tension , that we experience in this episode and that scene in particular .
While the visual event of Hiromatsu ’s death need some endeavor , one of Osei - Kuffour Jr. ’s biggest focuses was play up the understanding between him and Toranaga in that moment , communicated solely through their center as Toranaga " Nevere mean " for his friend to commit seppuku :
Emmanuel Osei - Kuffour Jr. : Yeah , so Hiroyuki Sanada is an unbelievable actor . There ’s not much you necessitate to tell him , in my notion , his brass is magic , subtle expressions give everything . So , for that view in special , this whole episode is a bit of House of Cards . The entire episode , I really need the audience asking the question , " Is this a artifice ? Is he really giving up Hiromatsu ? Is there some posterior motivation natural event ? Or is he really , truly giving up here ? " That ’s what I wanted the audience asking in every single conniption , so even though Toranaga is n’t in a scene , you feel the weight unit of him and his absence .
So , when we get to this minute , every single character in that elbow room has a alone emotional journey in relation to Toranaga . It was really important for me to build to that bit with every single character in that room , so this eventual death meant something to every single soul in that way . But regarding specifically to Toranaga , he never intended for Hiromatsu to give himself in that scene . I think there was an aim in the back of his mind that he would require somebody in his clan to commit seppuku to make it sense real to Osaka , and that he wait the generals to do that , in many mode .
But I do n’t think he intend for his unspoiled protagonist to do that . So , when we go back to that moment , of smooth tension in that staredown , a part of it is him make a performance for every samurai in that way , so that when Osaka take heed the newsworthiness , they think it . But a part of it is doing something with his eyes , and talking in codification to Hiromatsu . So , Hiromatsu finally , during that staredown , understands what is needed , and peck up on what Toronaga is actually doing , which is why he decides to join in on this public presentation and institutionalize seppuku himself . So , that ’s what was really happen in that long , drawn - out staredown , and it was insidious . Nobody else in the room felt it , but there was a quiet communication happening between the two of them .
Osei-Kuffour Jr. Packed A Lot Of Details In Buntaro & Mariko’s Tea Ceremony
Another major present moment inShogunepisode 8 come in the form of its mid - episode tea ceremony , in whichBuntaro attempts to woo his wife , Mariko , and win over her to commit felo-de-se in an cause to protest Toranaga ’s surrender . While already a sequence full of rich dialogue , Osei - Kuffour Jr. worked hard to capture the " excited undercurrent " work on between Buntaro and Mariko , turning to focus on the various details in the Seth as a key means of highlight the deep themes :
Emmanuel Osei - Kuffour Jr. : Yeah , that was also a high spot for me , and it was also one of those thing that , early on , you want to get right . I ’m not a tea ceremony expert , but I was prosperous to have prima producers . This whole series is really drive for authenticity and relying on historians and Japanese advisor and experts to really create a world that we had n’t escort before , that felt really specific and reliable to the experience of last in Japan during the Sengoku Era .
But , for me , it ’s not just a tea leaf ceremony , and I remember everybody would agree that it take to be about something more . We call for to feel something in this thing , so one of my challenges early on was to figure out how to make an emotional undercurrent in this tea ceremony , while also being authentic to something that most mass that have visited Japan know about . The teatime ceremony is a very wide respected and fuck appendage , so what I did is I really wanted to make the scene , the fashioning of the afternoon tea , specifically about Buntaro , and a thoughtfulness and a sacrificial nature that we just do n’t see from him .
So , it was really him admit one last chance at wooing his wife , so when Mariko first come into the room , she has a reaction to everything she ’s get wind , she has a reaction to the paries scrolls , she has a reaction to the prime . She has a response to every exclusive cock that he ’s using in the tea ceremonial , everything that was chosen by Buntaro was meant to pass on that , " I ’m listening , and I hear you . " There ’s a lot of thoughtfulness on his part , and part of the grounds why I shot so many tight pellet , so many elaborate blastoff , was to put the interview in Mariko ’s percentage point of survey , so we find the detail , and we get a clear sense of how much effort Buntaro is place into this one cup of tea for his married woman .
Osei-Kuffour Jr. Hasn’t Heard Talks OfShogunSeason 2 (But Is Ready To Return)
Though ab initio plan as a miniseries adapting Clavell ’s account book , Shogunseason 2 looks to be in the other stages of ontogenesis , with Hiroyuki Sanada having signed a deal to reprise his role of Toranaga in another time of year . With these talks in such an other phase angle , Osei - Kuffour Jr. rest unclear as to whether he will return , though is incredibly hopeful and grateful for his experience on season 1 :
Emmanuel Osei - Kuffour Jr. : I would love to be back on circuit board , this is my favorite show experience ever . Like I enjoin , I have a very strong relationship with the cast members , I know the report of this show , it ’s very truthful to my experience living there . I felt a lot of my life experience exist in Japan for six twelvemonth kind of come full circle on the show , really reading in between the lines , pick up the importance of suit in and just understanding about culture was really very utilitarian on a show like this . And it ’s on exhibit in every installment in the serial . I do n’t know anything about season 2 , I know as much as you do , but if there is a season 2 , I would love to be a part of it .
I just really want to say thank you to Justin Marks and Ed McDonnell for break me a guesswork on the show . It has meant a heap to me . Hiroyuki Sanada , as well , was a very participating producer on the show , so just bring a opportunity to work with somebody I ’ve idolize like him , and Tadanobu Asano , was a dreaming . I really hope this opens up the doorway to more shows about Nipponese culture for a westerly audience , and that they really angle into the legitimacy of that culture , because there ’s a lot of untapped potential in Japan . I hope that people uphold to get that experience .
Osei-Kuffour Jr.’s Lips Are Sealed OnWelcome To Derry(Though Promises Fans Will Be Happy)
Emmanuel Osei - Kuffour Jr. : Ah , I ca n’t really talk about that . But I will say it ’s a TV show . So , you discover more about the character reference , it ’s very , very character - drive . I ’ve enjoy preparing for that show , and I recollect audiences will be as scared as they are in the original movies , and Andy Muschietti ’s handprints are all over this serial publication . So , I call up people will be very emotional for the series . [ Mike Flanagan and Andy Muschietti ] are quite like . Both Andy and Mike are revulsion aficionado , they ’re also very much all about emotion , and character .
It ’s really unvoiced to comment on it without talk about the show , so I wish I could speak more about it . When the episode wrapper , I ’m sure I ’ll have some time to reverberate . But yeah , I love the show . My experience on this series has been just as deep and action , and I ’ve been able-bodied to capture emotional nuance in literary genre on that show , as well . So , for me , every show I work on move forward , I have to retrieve a way to find nuance and emotion , irrespective of whether it ’s an adventure serial like Shogun , a horror serial publication like Welcome to Derry or The Midnight Club , or even The Recruit . Just start the chance to continue to tell very nuanced , emotionally charged , character - driven musical genre shows is something that I ’ve been very , very golden to do , and I hope I can continue doing .
