Screen Rant ’s Vic Holtreman reviewsRED
REDis awesome .
No , I do n’t usually set off motion picture critical review that way , but I ’ve seenREDtwice ( the first sentence was an bare work mark ) and I liked it evenmoreupon the second wake . Now keep in psyche that I havenotread the comic book serial that the picture show is based on ( although I did read the prequel comic for the film ) - and from what I ’ve learn the movie is very dissimilar from the photographic print adaptation . I ca n’t portend how fan of the comic will react to the film , but on its own it ’s a hell of a portion of merriment .
At the very start we ’re introduced to Frank Moses ( Bruce Willis ) , and within moments , without a word spoken , we get a feel for just what variety of Isle of Man Frank is : Reserved , meticulous , quiet . A gentleman who has grudgingly adjust to a conscientiously ordered life .
Frank ’s only seeming tangency with the international world is with Sarah Ross ( Mary Louise - Parker ) , a customer support somebody at the Veteran ’s Administration who has been designate as Frank ’s congressman . They ’ve never met but have uprise an interesting friendly relationship over the phone and one can find the potential romance simmering just beneath the control surface . As I ’m sure you ’re aware just based on the trailer , Frank is ex - CIA , and it ’s clear that his relationship with Sarah ( however tenuous it may be ) will soon be drawing her into his world , which is guaranteed tonotcontinue to be scrupulously ordered .
When Frank ’s house is invaded by a hit squad , we find out very quickly about the other side of his personality - his past life as a field factor - and based on what transpires , one of the best the CIA has ever had .
All this within the first 10 minutes of the film .
Along the way Frank meet a turn of honest-to-god compatriot including Joe ( Morgan Freeman ) , who seems like he would n’t suffer a fly , Marvin ( John Malkovich ) , a strung out , entirely paranoid sort and Victoria ( Helen Mirren ) , a lovely , attractive older adult female with a killer whale streak lurking just beneath her civilised façade .
They come together to see out who is killing off everyone involved in a black ops operation many years ago - and they ’re all on the list . We have Karl Urban as a " right soldier " CIA agent who ’s been tell that Moses must be killed , but not why , the awesomeBrian Coxas Ivan Simonov , an former schooltime Russian spy with a connexion to the grouping and a great minuscule cameo by the big , great old actor who I wo n’t give away .
While the original graphic novel was drop a line by long prison term old stager Warren Ellis and Cully Hammer , the screenplay was done by Jon and Eric Hoeber . Neither of these two fellows has an extended writing CV ( consort toIMDB , anyway ) , but they ’ve written a wonderful screenplay , full of niggling surprise , great lineament , dialogue , and loads of cool moments . They ’re pen the screenplay for the forthcoming board game - based movieBattleship , and all of a sudden my interest and anticipation in that film has increase well .
Then we have director Robert Schwentke , another guy with nothing that really stands out in his directorial survey . But here he does a rattling caper keeping the picture show moving forward , even when things slow down they ’re not boring . The movie has a rose hip , form of retro trend about it and it does n’t lose from the terrible disease of rickety - cam . I also savor the soundtrack immensely , great music choice throughout .
As to the performances , how can you go wrong with a cast like this ? Willis underplay it , making him at the same time that much more menacingandlikable . Malkovich is , well , Malkovich - which is to say insane in the best way possible . I always enjoy see Morgan Freeman on the big screen , and Brian Cox is also one of my very favored actors - he delivers a public presentation that I can only describe as delicious ( it sound weird , but trust me , it fits ) . Karl Urban - the man is a tilt , he ’s so steady you could use the man as a building foundation . Oh , and can I tell you how fabulously awesome it is to watch this self-respectful , elegant woman name Helen Mirren tear it up with a .50 cal machine throttle ? There are no words ….
And now I have to comment on Mary Louise - Parker ’s carrying out …
Because she functions as the Pisces - out - of - water / interview proxy , her role is critical . Everything right about her in this film is everything that was improper with Cameron Diaz ' performance inKnight and Day : She ’s likeable , funny and endearing . And because she goes from being completely freaked out to being completely " into it " over the course of the plastic film , she could have jump off the shark on either goal of that spectrum , but she nails it throughout both extreme and she ’s somebody you truly care about - and will therefore understand why Frank handle about her as well .
REDwas just a attack - a real fun ride - and is destined to be a movie that I ’ll foot up on Blu - electron beam and will cast away in the thespian three to four time a year . It ’s shop PG-13 for force , and if you read my reviews regularly you ’ll know that I ’m pretty sore to what ’s appropriate for kids - I would n’t have a problem bringing a nine or 10 year former to this , and when it opens this Friday I ’ll be bringing my 14 twelvemonth former daughter to see it for sure .
Loosely based on the comic series of the same name, RED tells the story of a former CIA black ops agent who rallies his team back together for one last mission: eliminating the assassin who is out to kill him.
