Olympic Dreams

From film producer Jeremy Teicher ( Tracktown ) comes a novel romanticistic comedy , Olympic Dreams , filmed in the Olympic Athlete Village during the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang , South Korea . Teicher engage guerrilla filmmaking to   tell his story about a cross - country skier who forms a romantic connexion with a volunteer dental practitioner   after her competition is over ahead of time on in the biz . Teicher ’s   long - sentence better half Alexi Pappas , herself an Olympic athlete and long space moon-curser , wizard   inOlympic Dreams , in add-on to function as   Colorado - writer and producer alongside Teicher and co - superstar Nick Kroll . Olympic Dreams ' wing look at the 2018 Olympics is much more compelling than the moving picture ’s bland and contrived romantic clowning storyline .

Olympic Dreamsis received read-only storage - com transportation , in that the character suffer , they stumble a bit in their relationship , but finally retrieve some kind of hope and felicity - there ’s even a sprint through the airport style finish , but here it ’s the Olympian village ’s bus depot . In the moving-picture show , bad-tempered - country skier Penelope ( Pappas ) is focused entirely on her event , but once it ’s over , she flounder to   figure out what ’s next , and spends her fourth dimension in the Olympian settlement wandering around and trying to plug in with other athletes . Eventually ,   she meets voluntary dentist Ezra ( Kroll ) , who ’s similarly stuck marvel what will total next for him after the games since he broke off an engagement just before heading to PyeongChang . The pair form an awkwardly sweet connection , but it stay to be seen if they ’ll be able to get over their several fear in orderliness to explore what ’s between them .

Olympic Dreams (2019) - Poster - Nick Kroll & Alexi Pappas

The story ofOlympic Dreamsis rather overly simple , whether by requirement of film at the Olympics or by pick ( or a combination of both ) , and there does n’t seem to have been much of a script , as many of the lines make out off as advertizing libbed by Pappas and Kroll . Sometimes this work to the movie ’s benefit , giving it a natural , unassuming magical spell rooted in its realism . However , more often than not , it leads to an awkwardness that ’s more plainly uncomfortable than compelling . This realism is also on occasion thrown out the window by Teicher for an overly contrived story beat , like Penelope   murder on Gus Kenworthy ( playing himself ) and him having to tell her he ’s homophile - and this manages to be even more   uncomfortable than the pic ’s normal awkwardness . There are other peculiar directing choices by Teicher that take away from the   realistic feelOlympic Dreamsseems to be going for , which necessarily give the   movie   more of an odd and haphazard   finger .

For their parts , Pappas and Kroll do what they can with what they ’re working with , but regrettably , the duet do n’t have much quixotic chemical science ; as such , when Penelope and Ezra do share the requisite read-only storage - com candy kiss , it feels more obligatory than romantic . singly , Pappas brings a spell to Penelope ’s clumsiness , while Kroll shrinks under Ezra ’s more serious nature , and they ’re more pleasurable to watch when they ’re interacting with others than together . Kroll shines brightest when he ’s goofing off with Olympic athletes in Ezra ’s tooth doctor ’s hot seat , and Pappas   come alive most when working with Kenworthy . For his part , Kenworthy is the most comfortable in front of the photographic camera , at least in this circumstance ; he has an easy magic spell that makes his portions of the cinema more compelling than perhaps anything else inOlympic aspiration .

Ultimately , what ’s most interesting aboutOlympic Dreamsisn’t the story of Penelope and Ezra , or even Pappas and Kroll ’s performances ,   but the   backstage look at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and the Olympic Athlete Village . Every other year , the world becomes transfixed by the Olympics , whether it ’s the Summer or Winter game , and thanks to Pappas ' access by being an athlete , Teicher is able-bodied to take viewer behind the conniption   and showcase the event from   an jock ’s position . The idea that an jock on such a public stage and surrounded by so many others who are , superficially at least , like them can   palpate detached is gripping . That is perhaps why the moments when Pappas ' Penelope interacts with other athletes trying to incur some variety of human connector amid the pageant and gamy stakes rivalry wind up being much more compelling than her fit with Kroll ’s Ezra . It seems like there was a more compelling pic in here somewhere , but it gets lost in the   banal   rom - com   plot .

As such , Olympic Dreamsmay be worth watching for those becharm by the Olympics and craving a peep behind the scene of what athlete ' life are like while living in the Olympic village - but through a fictional lens . To be sure , Olympic Dreamsisn’t a infotainment , even if it at times experience that way ,   and that may be a hard hurdle for witness . There ’s too much of a fictionalise story to be a medico , but   without its backdrop of the PyeongChang Olympics ,   the film   would n’t be a compelling rom - com either - so it ’s difficult to say who precisely this movie is for . Perhaps the very narrow intersection between fans of the Olympics , fan of read-only storage - coms and those interested in insurgent filmmaking . Olympic Dreamscertainly had the potential to be a compelling backstage look at the Olympic Athlete Villageanda amorous comedy , but it does n’t do either very well and wind up mostly falling categorical .
