Well , we can definitely peach aboutDiscovery509 . In all honesty , this is one of my favorite episodes of the serial publication . It was so much merriment . I do n’t require to go like Stefan onSaturday Night Live , but this installment had everything . action mechanism , sense of humor , suspense .
Jonathan Frakes : Yeah , it ’s one of the best . And I consider it sets up the finale . It was shocking at the end , was n’t it ?

You ’ve directed eight episodes ofDiscovery . And this one had so much cool poppycock in it . It started off with this invert camera move , and it reminded me ofFirst Contact , the shots of Picard at the outset .
Jonathan Frakes : The tieback shot , yeah ! That ’s funny you make for that up . I exercise with a new DP there , Maya Bankovic , who I ’ve worked on Strange New Worlds with as well . We desire to design something to prepare up the show . And because Olatunde [ Osunsanmi ] , who is the producing director of the show , and Michelle [ Paradise ] , and all the writers , they further you to , as the wonderful Robbie Duncan McNeill enjoin , you ’re encouraged to shoot to charge . ' And she said , ' Tunde would keep go . ' ( laughs ) Which was so inspiring , because she experience that we ’re very competitive . So it produce an atmosphere where you’re able to really have a ball , specially with the camera , because he ’s an unbelievable shotmaker and he inspires all of us to join him at that level if we can .

Jonathan Frakes : I was really surprised because I do n’t commemorate " The Chase " being that pregnant in the oeuvre of Next Gen. And then when Michelle explained how that was going to be the kickoff and the premiss of the show … You bed , I got " The Chase " only by the luck of the tie . That ’s how the board act . On Next Gen , you got your episode dealt to you by some random polling of straws , But on Discovery , and also , even more significantly on Strange New Worlds , they assign you an episode that they trust you would be suited to take aim . So it was just coincidence that " The Chase " happened to be one that I had directed .
It ’s so different now , the wayStar Trekis structured , right ? Because as you say , you get assigned your episode based on your skill localise or what your interest might be . And then , you do n’t have to be intelligence - perfect with the dialogue any longer . you could recreate around with it .
Jonathan Frakes : That ’s an interesting point . That happened on " Those Old Scientists " where we had Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid come in . Tawny a Second City improv medical specialist , and they mess up around a picayune bit with the lines . I had Kat Lyn and Bill Wolkoff on the lot with me as my writers , and we all sort of locked eyes , and I just whispered to them and say , ' What do you think ? Should we just let them go ? ' And they order , ' Sure . '
And that freed up Anson , and that rid up Rebecca , and all of a sudden , we did the scenes as written , but then we played with the scenes , and that was such a chill to have . Because it was so strict [ on Next Gen ] , as I ’m sure you ’ve heard . It was so strict on our show . It was strict on all the shows about the dialogue . So it was a very freeing moment .
This is your lastDiscovery . You did n’t know it was gon na be the final season when you did it . But you still haveStrange New Worldscoming up for time of year 3 . Are you on tap forStarfleet Academyor time of year 4 ofStrange New Worlds ? Are you go to keep hold up ?
Jonathan Frakes : I ’m gon na keep going on Strange [ New Worlds ] . I was asked to come and do Starfleet Academy , but the [ episode directing ] one-armed bandit conflicted with my son ’s wedding . So I ’ll occur back , hopefully , for the 2d season [ of ] Academy .
