I did n’t fix my hopes very high up walk into the theater to watchJonah Hex . I acknowledge it was based on a DC comical book case and that was the extent of my knowledge on the subject . I was a unclouded slate , my mind a lump of unformed Lucius DuBignon Clay just waiting for director Jimmy Hayward ( Horton discover a Who ! ) to wrap his hand around it like a picture fromGhost , molding it into something exciting and entertaining .
Well Hayward is no Swayze , because I ’m sorry to say thatJonah Hexis NOT go to be the surprise hit of the summer . The picture show ’s story and pace clods along like a gymnastic horse who ’s thrown a shoe , unbeknown to the passenger .
The tempo offspring are largely due to the scattering - brain written material elan of Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor , or as they are know in the credits “ Neveldine & Taylor . ”Jonah Hexvery much come the fast - paced and hectic styling that N&T have established in their previous works , Crank , Crank : High VoltageandGamer .

The opening credits are actually very entertaining and are , in my view , the upright part of the movie . Hayward has used a modified version of cellphone blending life to secernate the intact story of who Jonah Hex is in a short 5 instant revivify cartridge clip . Jonah Hex ( as he is called throughout the intact flick because no one ever hollo him just Jonah – EVER ! ) has made an enemy in his former commander Quentin Turnbull , play by the once - great John Malkovich , who ’s performance here is only more or less better than Megan Fox ’s .
Jonah Hex wipe out Turnbull ’s son and betrayed his unit - so , in an act of revenge , Turnbull ’s burn Hex ’s wife and Logos alert forcing him to follow them break down . Then , just to “ rub it in , ” he scars Hex with a branding iron . But that ’s not how Jonah Hex scram that beautiful nerve we ’ve all seen in the trailers . That part comes later .
So far , even though a couple of minor plot of land full point are hazy , the story is fairly simple and prosperous to pursue - it ’s homo versus man , mano a mano , the anti - hero pitted against the villain that did him amiss . I get that , and if the writers would have left it to that , the movie believably would be much better . Instead , Turnbull leaves his impudently scarred conquest hanging on an decade from which , of course of study , he survives with help from the Crow Indians . As Jonah Hex explain , he did n’t become immortal , but was close enough to being all in that he can now address with the all in .

What worked inJonah Hex ? Josh Brolin ’s performance is actually reasonably good and there are some confused second of humor that workplace ( I liked the bit about the horse ’s name ) and a twain of the engagement scenes are enjoyable .
What did n’t work inJonah Hex ? Megan Fox and John Malkovich ’s execution are just plain risky and neither one of them can adjudge a “ Southern ” stress . All of these character survive in Georgia and all the actors playing them can do is say “ Ya’ll ” a few times . It does n’t aid that most of the corny one - liners we pick up in the trailer are delivered like they are bromidic one - liners in the film .
I can believe a lot when it come to picture . I can believe that Eli Whitney was a weapons superstar , that a gargantuan carom that will obliterate everything in its path could be build in the previous 1800 ’s and a crow vanish out of a man ’s mouth during an Indian medicine ritual but I draw and quarter the tune in the credibility sand when Megan Fox turn into a smoothing iron slinging Super whore .
as luck would have it for moviegoers , Toy Story 3opens this weekend as well and if Warner Bros. is very golden , most people will forget thatJonah Hexwas even in theaters .
