That read , decades of obsessing over revulsion flick have resulted in some somewhat intense character critiques . In particular , my love of slashers - and loyal opinion in Randy ’s principle of survival fromScream- think of it ’s virtually impossible to invalidate thinking about how characters could ’ve avoided their fate . There ’s also a ( slenderly ) perturbing conviction that I could by all odds make it in the same scenarios . So it was really frustrating to watch Ryan miss multiple chances at getting the upper hand on thekillers inThe Strangers : Chapter 1 .
Let ’s face at the first massive misstep . After Ryan and Maya undertake to escape in the homeowner ’s concern , the Man in the Mask , aka Scarecrow , T - bone their car into a tree . Maya fly , and Ryan managed to escape the wreckage . I then had to physically stop myself from shout out at the movie theater screen as Ryan hopple by the Man in the Mask ’s empty hand truck . Still , there was hope Ryan and Maya would have bring together the raw generation of possible repulsion victims who laudably push back or use their wit to outmaneuver their terrorizers . Rather than present characters I wanted to root for , The unknown : Chapter 1 ’s characters decrease into common horror dupe trope , reserve Ryan and Maya to fall right into the killers ' hands .
I whole get that slasher pic demand to trust on that cat - and - computer mouse chase to build the suspense . But having your champion spark off over themselves , send away potentially lifesaving medical devices out of their sack , and force the character to split up was frustrating on top of the misunderstanding Ryan directly made .
