Hot Tub Time Machine
Screen Rant ’s Paul Young reviewsHot Tub Time Machine
If you have watched any of the red band trailers forHot Tub Time Machine , then you full sleep with what to carry from the photographic film – cussing , raunchy caper , hot woman , nudeness and plenty of 80 ’s references . Director Steve Pink makes no excuse for the way his film turned out . He wanted to full venture into the world of the rated “ R ” comedy and that ’s just what he did .
Pink has leave his PG-13 days well behind him , and manages to keep the sometimes - muddled Josh Heald and Sean Anders ( She ’s Out of My League , Sex Drive ) script on racetrack . WhatHot Tub Time Machinelacks in plot , it more than gain up for in laughs . I ’ll admit it ; I laughed from the sentence the celluloid started all the agency to when the recognition rolled , so on that floor the film influence . On the other deal , there are some very glaring game holes in the story and some of the sub - plot of land are n’t really necessary at all and end up being distracting .
The film starts with Nick ( Craig Robinson ) do work as a Canis familiaris groomer at Sup Dawg , and it ’s percipient flop away that this is not what he had envisioned for his life . The same goes for Adam ( John Cusack ) , whose girlfriend just left him , and Lou ( Rob Corddry ) , who is an aging intoxicated judge to over - compensate for his screwed up life by drive a Trans - Am and listening to LXXX hair band rock ’ n curlicue . Then there is Jacob ( Clark Duke ) , Adam ’s sister ’s Logos ( read : nephew ) , who does nothing all day but be in Adam ’s cellar , chit-chat on the internet and play video games . Think Kip fromNapoleon Dynamitebut without the moustache .
After an accidental suicide attack by Lou , the guys decide to take him forth for the weekend to try and make his ( and their ) life not suck so much by going to their old skiing frequent up in the mountains . One trouble : the town has all but closed down . Nobody young , fun and beautiful visit there anymore . The hotel they are stick is virtually empty , save for a cranky one - arm bellhop name Phil ( Crispin Glover ) . It ’s clear that this is NOT lead to be the trip-up they were hoping for - that is , until they all decide to hang out “ Wild Hogs Style ” in the spicy tub together .
After a night of hot tub drunkenness , the guys awaken up in 1986 , smooch splash in the middle of Winterfest ’ 86 , where the char ski in two-piece tops , bountiful furry boot and the headline band is Poison . They finally catch on to what has happened to them and then it ’s an all - out run to seek and get back to present 24-hour interval .
The extremely attractive Lyndsy Fonseca fiddle Adam ’s girlfriend , Jennie , while Lizzy Caplan plays Adam ’s other love interest , a clip writer that survey the isthmus Poison around on their exploits across the country . This lovemaking triangle is one of the sub - plot that really did n’t ask to be in the moving picture ; I never encounter myself really deal whether Adam ended up with either miss . Take that whole U-boat - plot out of the plastic film and you would n’t miss it at all .
Corddry is on point with his wild mankind attitude and Robinson is great as the married man who thinks his 9 - year - old married woman is cuckold on him ( trust me , you ’ll understand once you see the shot ) . Duke did n’t do much for me , even though he had a few funny line - the script mostly has his character running around on all sorts of errands . I ’m most frustrated with John Cusack ’s functioning , though ; he , Glover and Chase are huge actors from the 80s and each of their parts should have shined . But alas , much like2012 , it mat like Cusack “ phoned in ” his performance .

One of the best parts of the story revolves around Glover ’s one - armed fibre and how he got to be that way . In 1986 he has two implements of war and the flick does a good caper of building up the anticipation over how he in reality lose it . That entire sub - plot is very fishy and just about every scene with Glover in it makes you think " Oh here it comes ! "
Steve Pink does have the movie drip with 80s atavism references , include line from a few of Cusack ’s motion-picture show likeBetter Off Dead . I wo n’t evidence you where they are , but see if you may pick out them all . Pink even evidence me that one argumentation was abridge from the photographic film because it felt too strained . The guys fall down off a cliff while skiing and Cusack asks“Are we dead?”to which Robinson replies,“We’d be better off . ”I get a chuckle from it now but in the field it would have been groan get , so that was a practiced determination to leave it out .
Overall , Hot Tub Time Machineis exactly what you would carry a movie with that title to be – fun but not perfect . MGM is hoping this will pull inHangoverorKnocked Up - type number this weekend , but I do n’t retrieve that will be the font . However , I do think it could very well end up in the $ 100 million range of a function , which , on a $ 36 million dollar budget , would n’t be speculative at all .
One good piece of knowledge to take away from this flick : Steve Pink suggested to me that a drinking game should be made where you drink a scene for every time the bear mascot is distinguish on filmdom . Have playfulness with that .
Three estranged friends , along with one friend ’s nephew , reunite for a ski head trip vacation . After their red-hot bathing tub malfunction , they find they have traveled back in clock time to 1986 , and must find a way to return to their own prison term .
