This is another superfluous, mediocre addition to the Hannibal Lecter franchise. Has this dead horse been beaten enough?
I think the Boy Scouts should sum up another merit badge to the inclination : Mediocre Movie Franchise Survival . I would certainly qualify for it ; after all , this is the fifth movie I ’ve seen that features Hannibal Lecter . One was excellent ( The Silence of the Lambs ) , one was very good ( Manhunter ) , one was terrible ( Hannibal ) and two were mediocre ( Red DragonandHannibal Rising ) . This tardy installing in the franchise impart me with a feeling of ambivalence . I suspect most of the critics will finish up complaining about how the teen Hannibal is , in many aspects , blatantly different from the adult Hannibal . That is indeed a valid complaint , and I ’ll concern on that a little during this review , but the question going through my idea were quite dissimilar . Why do we ask to know more about Hannibal ’s immature years ? Why do we need to understand his motivations and tribulations ? The unforesightful answer is , we do n’t . It is better for some things to stay on enigmatic , and the type of Hannibal Lecter falls squarely into that category .
There are quite a few thing in life that are more exciting because there ’s an element of mystery to them . Hannibal Lecter did n’t have the lion ’s share of CRT screen clip inManhunterorThe Silence of the Lambs , but that did n’t block him from feature a major impact on the plot line . Indeed , much of the allure of his character stemmed from the fact that we did n’t really know all that much about him . Whether it intends to or not , Hannibal Risingtries to throw most of that mystery out the windowpane . It deigns to offer us an explanation for Hannibal ’s eventual metabolism into a psychopathic serial killer , as if such a thing could ever be explained from a coherent and noetic point of view . It even expects us to empathize with him , but it never comes closely to giving us a good reason to do that .
The tale start out in Lithuania , during World War II . Hannibal is a vernal child , and his child sister Mischa means the world to him . The Nazis have invaded , and the Lecter family is on the streamlet . His parents end up being killed by an aerial bombardment , and Mischa hurt a rather unpleasant dying at the workforce of some stranded Russian soldier . The story then fast - forwards to eight years later . We see that Hannibal has maturate up in an orphanage ; ironically , that construction was formerly Lecter castle , where he spent his early childhood years . The teenage Hannibal ( act as by Gaspard Ulliel ) has no friends and he seldom says a intelligence to anyone . He decide to course off from the orphanage and stay with his uncle ’s widow ( play by Gong Li ) in France .
Up until this point in the flick , the story is quite challenging . However , thing start to become very weird , very quick . For starter motor , Hannibal and his aunt have a very skinny human relationship ; at times it almost seems incestuous . The other odd development is that she teach him the art of brand fighting . At one detail , I marvel if I was watching one of theKill Billmovies . So now that Hannibal knows his path around a sword , would you deal to guess what he terminate up doing ? After Hannibal place his first murder , this is his aunt ’s opportunity to realize what a sociopath her nephew is , hand him over to the fuzz and move on with her life . Instead , she select to help Hannibal incubate up the murder . Seems to me they both ask some face time with Dr. Phil …
briefly after this , Hannibal is accept into aesculapian school . It is during this time that he starts get the picture up old memories of his sis Mischa ’s death , and he vow to take retaliation on every soldier who was involved . Most of them conveniently subsist in France now ( of course ) , which is a great sentence - saver for a homicidal psychopath who ’s always on the go . Hannibal is n’t exactly subtle in his slaying technique , so once again he speedily draw the attention of the law . Inspector Popil ( act by Dominic West ) , who specialize in war criminal offence , takes fussy interest in Hannibal because he ’s aware of the circumstances surround the death of his class member . He asks Hannibal to help the police bring Mischa ’s killers to justice , but will he respond to logic and reason ? Is it potential for anyone to give him before he derive wholly into his psychopathic abysm ?
It ’s a considerably difficult undertaking to rate this pic on its own merit , mainly because it ’s riding on the coattails of an constituted franchise . As such , it needs begs a comparison to the late films . As played by Anthony Hopkins , Hannibal in the main playact classy and has a quick wit . At times , he can even be sorcerous . In this picture , he comes across as creepy and immorality . How are we supposed to enjoy the picture if there ’s nothing for us to like about its protagonist ? In the premature film , Hannibal tended to choose his victims arbitrarily , with circumstances and opportunity being the primary actuate element . In this film , he take each of his victim for a specific reason , and he carefully design most of the murders ahead of time . Why does such a divergence in methodology be between the teenaged Hannibal and the grownup Hannibal ? We never find out . Adding to the confusedness is the fact that Gaspard Ulliel looks nothing like Anthony Hopkins ; he wait like a cross between Matthew Modine and Crispin Glover . Another minor pain in the neck is that in this moving picture , Hannibal spends his shaping years in Lithuania and France , never setting foot in Britain , and yet in the other films he has a British accent .
at last , though , my primary take withHannibal Risingis not with how consistently Hannibal is portray between the various movies ; it is with the film itself . The storyline is too simple and lackluster ; the movie is essentially a by - the - number retaliation moving picture . That surprised me , considering the fact that Thomas Harris himself spell the script , found on his al-Qur’an . There are quite a few clichés to be found in the hand , most of which are spoken by Inspector Popil . ( exemplar : " There is no word to key him , other than … monster . " ) However , there is an especially affecting line spoken by Hannibal ’s aunty towards the oddment of the movie . It accurately sums up one of the big problem plaguing the entire franchise : " What is left in you to love ? "
Overall , Hannibal Risingis not a terrible movie , but it ’s not a great movie either . It ’s just hunky-dory . I did n’t recover the violence and gore to be extremely graphical ( at least not compare toHannibal ) , but young children shouldnotsee this movie . Bottom line , if you just absolutely have to screw everything about Hannibal Lecter ’s lifetime and what ( ostensibly ) motivated his behavior , set your expected value appropriately low and go see it . Otherwise , you should just allow him remain enigmatic , the agency he was originally meant to be .
