Is it ( at long last ) the proceeds of Dwayne ( formerly known as " The Rock " ) Johnson as a big , baffling , scary badass of the sort you would n’t want to run into in a dark alley ? Oh , yes . Is it just another another check - your - wit - at - the - threshold action film ? Yes … and no .
Within here and now of the start of the film , you will understand that " Driver " ( Johnson ) is , well , a driven human beings . Everything about his demeanor says " gentleman’s gentleman on a military mission " - and he is the very definition of individual - mindedness . He ’s being released from prison after 10 years and the only affair on his mind is the indigence to avenge the slaying of his brother .
Driver is a human race to be reckoned with - a man with a reputation that says to most the great unwashed " just back away . " Within minute of arc of the start of the film , he walks into an office building , then to a ocean of cubicles , with the determination of a Terminator - and without disinclination puts a heater into the read/write head of his first dupe .
As the film progress , we ’re afford the backstory of Driver and his sidekick in flashback . It ’s apparently a case of high-risk bozo getting taken out by some " badder " guy , and the brother was fulfill properly in front of Driver . Eventually we come to ascertain the details of the circumstances that led to all this , and trust it or not , there ’s in reality a bit of pith amidst all this offence and brutality .
On the other side we have an odd couple constabulary partnership made up of Billy Bob Thornton , playing a pig 10 years from retreat with an estranged wife , a surprisingly rich son ( considering he and his married woman , play by Moon Bloodgood , are both slight ) and a regretful drug drug abuse - and Carla Gugino , a no - nonsense copper who ’s not too well-chosen about being mate up with a guy cable who has one foot out the door and does n’t seem to have it together .
As the picture show progresses we see that Driver is not a brutal grampus at heart , but is act out of a gumption of justice and retribution . Each putting to death is more hard than the one before as he set out to question what he is doing - while the constabulary are stimulate closer to get him .
There ’s a wildcard in the mix as well , as someone on Driver ’s death tilt has hired a vernal , multi - millionare , ex - software developer ( played byOliver Jackson - Cohen ) who seems to assassinate multitude just because he ’s bored and it ’s challenge . He has a relationship with a hot young charwoman who Lost fans will recognize ( Maggie Grace ) . Their family relationship take up out distinctive , but then evolves to kind of creepy / bizarre in its endeavour at " normal . "

Not quite to the extent ofUnstoppable , Fasterhas the feel of a 1970s activeness film : For the most part it just force in a full-strength line , with Johnson on a seeking to receive the next person involved in the death of his brother , killing them , getting back in his early 70s Chevy Chevelle SS with a Hurst shifter and AM radio , and going after the next soul on the list . What takes away from the 70s feel , is the blooming shaky cam and some of the more " creative " tv camera angle - shooting up , from the floor towards Johnson and one of the bad guy campaign . Different ? Yeah ? Weird ? Yeah , that , too .
What storm me was thatFasterisn’t just a straight up revenge action movie with a two - dimensional lead character . Johnson plays a man who starts out completely positive of what he demand to do , but over time he start out to question whether it ’s really deserving it … is this really justice ? In the end , will the revenge live up to him or accomplish anything truly meaningful ?
Dwayne Johnson starts out as acute , mean , scary man - but as the film goes on he gets across to the audience his growing self - doubt and internal conflict over what he ’s doing . While most of the characters were pretty sterotypical , of all the performances , I ’d have to say that Carla Gugino ’s was the most " standard " ( ruffianly , unassailable female cop ) , and while Maggie Grace is a pleasure to the eyes , her performance seemed a bit stiff ( albeit much improve from her days onLost , in my opinion ) . Billy Bob is always convincing and did a dandy line here of impart the interview full circle with his character ( you ’ll understand when you see the movie ) . Oliver Jackson - Cohen had me distracted because ( and peradventure it ’s just me ) he seemed like a fraternal twin of Jake Gyllenhaal - and my encephalon kept asking"Isn’t that Gyllenhaal ? "
In the end , I came away fromFasterpleasantly surprised - I went in expecting a no - brainer action flick but found myself revel it quite a bit more than that and actually caring about at least our " hero . "
