Who knew Charlie Kaufman could write a compelling love story? Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet are perfectly cast in this movie, and Winslet’s Oscar nomination was well-deserved. The writing, direction and acting are all top-notch.
How well-chosen is the blameless vestal ’s peck !
The world forgetting , by the world forgot .
unending fair weather of the immaculate mind !
Each pray’r accepted , and each wish resign’d .
— Alexander Pope , from his poemEloisa to Abelard
First of all , there ’s an admission I postulate to make . Historically , I have n’t really liked Charlie Kaufman ’s piece of work . Do n’t get me incorrect ; I wish movies that make me think , I like movies that defy convention , I wish twisted movies and I care thoughtful , well - compose dialogue . Kaufman does well on all count , but for whatever reason , I have never really " acquire " his style of writing . I hatedBeing John Malkovichso much that I had to stop about halfway through the movie . Original ? Yes , but I did n’t get it . I had no need to seeAdaptation ; it did n’t appeal to me in the least . But this movie did . I was a little loth to see it in the dramaturgy because I bang it was going to be a mind trip ( and commit me , it is ) . But by the time it made it to DVD , I knew I had to see it , and I have to take , I was really surprised by how much I enjoy it .
The story is set up in the Long Island , New York area , and it bug out out with Joel Barish ( played by Jim Carrey ) going to a train post . At the last possible arcminute , he decides to switch trains . While on the train , he meets a free - bouncing charwoman named Clementine ( play by Kate Winslet ) . Although the initial encounter is a little awkward , they before long hit it off and begin a relationship . The picture cursorily skips over the details of the relationship ( for now ) and perish straight to the post - breakup phase . Joel is devastated because Clementine does n’t want to see him any longer . As it turns out , Clementine does n’t even know who Joel is . After she and Joel had a major disputation , she pass away to a aesculapian clinic call Lacuna to have him erased from her computer storage . wounded and angry , Joel decide he does n’t require to remember Clementine either , so he run low to the Lacuna agency to have the same procedure .
sound dim-witted enough — Clementine forgets Joel , Joel forgets Clementine and life goes on , veracious ? Well , yes and no . Throughout the movie , the audience is forced to inquire if people canreallyhave their memories erased , voluntarily or not . The other major publication is that part of the way through the retentiveness expunction , Joel understand he still cares for Clementine , so he decides he does n’t want to have his memories erased . By then , it ’s too late to back out , so Joel attempt to change his memory so he can keep them . Will Joel be able to remember Clementine ? Even if he does , what will happen with the human relationship , now that Clementine has a new boyfriend and no longer think back Joel ?
What I really liked about the picture show was how well the relationship between Joel and Clementine was portrayed . They do n’t fight all the sentence , and they ’re not living in bliss all the time either . The relationship has its ups and downs , as all relationship do , and it ’s interesting to see how their arguments can either demolish or improve the family relationship , depending on the scenario . The movie also has several side stories , mainly revolve around around the life and personalities of the Lacuna stave while they ’re working on Joel ’s computer storage expunction . What had me in stitches was how they had no respect for Joel ’s home or his belongings . They eat his food for thought , take whatever they want and basically trash the post without even giving it a 2nd thought . Having had contractors in and out of my home during the preceding few months , I think those scenery were hilarious .
At first I was n’t sure how to take the side stories of the Lacuna stave . ab initio , I did n’t think they belong there ; I thought the movie should focus on the kinship between Joel and Clementine . But as the movie live on , I started to realise that the staff prole ( trifle by Mark Ruffalo , Elijah Wood , Kirsten Dunst and Tom Wilkinson ) were just as screwed up as Joel and Clementine , if not more so . Indeed , the audience is forced to wonder at several peak throughout the motion picture whether the Lacuna staff might benefit from a computer memory erasure , or at least some psychiatrical counseling .
The chief reason I did n’t give this picture a staring five star is chiefly because I thought the portrayal of the side relationship between the Lacuna staff were far less compelling than the relationship between Joel and Clementine . A minor nitpick ? You betcha , but for a movie to get five stars from me , it has to really attain it out of the green . The same deficiency of compelling relationships kept me from enjoyingBeing John Malkovichmore than I did . All that apart , I thoughtEternal Sunshinewas excellent , and I urge it highly . I plan to add this to my videodisc collection . The writing , acting and direction were top - notch . Kate Winslet ’s Oscar nominating speech and Charlie Kaufman ’s Oscar profits were well - deserved .
