A bleak and starkly shot film that left me feeling like I needed a shower after watching it.
Downloading Nancypremiered here at Sundance 2008 and is the story of Nancy ( play by Maria Bello ) , a sternly emotionally damage woman married to and emotionally cold man ( Rufus Sewell as Albert ) who turns to the net for fellowship .
The film open up with Nancy discussing her idea on what happens after you pall with another womanhood . At this point it sounds like she is optimistic about the afterlife while her Quaker is very negative and hold on institute up counterpoints to make it sound like she could be somehow trapped in some mode after death . As it turns out , the friend turns out to be a healer who is trying to convince Nancy that death is not an safety valve or freedom .
Her hubby Albert is a successful businessman in the golf manufacture , and it consumes his life . He is very moth-eaten to his wife , which is twice unfortunate because of the fact that she has deep emotional trouble halt from being the dupe of sexual abuse as a child . She is pour with self - loathing and his attitude towards her certainly does n’t help matter .
She turns to Louis ( Jason Patric ) , who she has exchanged one C of emails and clamant messages with for comforter , or as close a thing to ease as she is capable to reach . She ego - mutilates with razor blade and she delight pain , all due to her uber - negatively charged ego picture .
One night she allow home , leaving nothing more than a Federal Reserve note for Albert stating that she is going to stay with friends in Baltimore . Instead she heads off to meet Louis , and their initial meeting , now in the real human race seems ungainly .
Of naturally at first we think it is going to be nothing more than a brief intimate affair , but as it turns out Louis has wall lined with homemade videotapes ( we never give away exactly what is on those tapes , but we can make a jolly good guess ) . The situation takes an even odder turn when Nancy observe that she has " get the money " that he has asked for .
As the story moves ahead it becomes exculpated that what Nancy want from Louis is for him to shoot down her , and free her from her harrowing existence . Nancy ’s healer ( played by Amy Brenneman ) try out and try out to get through to her , but to no avail .
The history is disjointed in that time - smart it leap all over the billet . In the final stage it does paint a pic of Nancy and Albert ’s life and the maturation of the relationship between her and Louis .
Now to some of you this may fathom interesting , and I suppose it could have been , but the overall effect of this film with it ’s politic , promising and wash off out colors on the projection screen and the details of the relationship that we are subjected to is quite uncheerful ( yes , I get it , that ’s the point ) and to be honest left me feel more than a bit dirty to have been witness to all this . Not " erotica " dirty , but " slimey " dirty , like going through individual dirty washables .
I watched this at a press screening and about a XII people got up and walk out during the showing . About two or three really spat at the destruction of it , but I infer there ’s no accounting for taste .
The closer the film got to the last the more ridiculous it became in conjunction with the ennui and frankly , repulsive stuff going on .
About 3/4 of the way through the film I was hope for " liberation " almost as much as Nancy . I honestly do n’t understand how an worker can look at a script like this and not just say : " Damn , that is f’ed up ! " and just move on to the next one .
I ’m giving this one star out of obligingness to the acting and the editing , but that ’s it . with child thumb down from me .
