Doug Jones : I feel very satisfied . I really do . I know that when any show was canceled , there ’s a sense of like , ' Oh , shoot ! ' But my plot line as Saru , I palpate , amount to a really capital conclusion . Professionally , he ’s had his promotions throughout the years , and he ’s now in a really good tantrum for him as a diplomat . His gentlemanlike qualities , and his wisdom , and his common sense of authority are coming into good fun . Now they ’re being used sagely as an ambassador to smaller planets . And being that he come from Kaminar , a pocket-size planet , he has a real heart for these social club finding their potential , and so that ’s a great fit .
And then , on the personal side , oh ! The romance with President T’Rina ? Please . When any diary keeper would ask me in years past , ' What do you require to see for Saru ? ' I always answered I would be intimate a Latinian language for him . Boy , did they come through for me , ripe ? T’Rina is such a outstanding fit for Saru . The two of them together … T’Rina is play by Tara Rosling , who is a Shakespearian - school actress who has Judi Dench quality . In fact , I jokingly call her Judi Dench all the time .

Doug Jones : Yeah , they kind of have everything . I do n’t imagine they have any needs . I think metre off . A marriage present for them would be a really long honeymoon . And do they do that on either of their own planets ? I mean Kaminar is beautiful . I would love for her to see more of Kaminar . Or maybe we have a vacation home on Kaminar , but we have our permanent home on Ni’Var because she ’s still President . Or maybe we take a vacation to a planet we ’ve never discovered before because we need to take more about a new culture together , and we sip some kind of a coco crapulence on a beach .
As you noted , Saru and T’Rina ’s human relationship was so dignified . And then , they finally buss at the wedding . And it feels like the whole season was build up to that osculation .
Doug Jones : Right . Because , again , we ’ve had a courtship that has been so self-respecting , and subtle , and very genteel . At the remnant of season four , we built all the room up to a handhold , and fans went nuts over it . Which is so sweet , that we can still have a courtship romance on film .
So , building up to our candy kiss at our wedding , I will tell you a little side tarradiddle . Tara Rosling , who plays T’Rina , was a little bit worried . Like , ' how do I buss a prosthetic face ? ' So I send off her a magazine that I found on YouTube of my last scene in The Shape of Water when Sally Hawkins had to kiss this rubber - clad fish , man . And I sound out , ' Just watch this , and does that appear real to you ? We ’re gon na draw it off just the same , trust me . ' And she was really quite soothe by that . And I think it turn out really well . We were both count forward to it .

Filming Star Trek: Discovery One Last Time With Directors Jonathan Frakes & Olatunde Osunsanmi

But to talk about Frakes specifically , being that he was a Trek doer , he understands us from an actor ’s standpoint , in a really peer kind of a way , and he also brings a sense of fun to the set . So does ' Tunde , that the crew just loves them both . You have intercourse , there ’s such high stakes in every installment narratively . We ’re playing doom and peril is just outside the window . And so , when you have a director who is good - humored and sing songs between takings , and gives you act centering that is like , ' This might work well ' , it just lightens the mood . The entire crew is in a good climate , and we all love Frakes so much .
A little rummy moment happened that I retrieve is going to be in the gag reel on the videodisk boxset . I have been somewhat dyslectic all my life , and not really wholly , but I ’ll transpose letter a lot in dustup if I do n’t really study it and vocalise it out . The give-and-take ' wedding ' … for all these years , I mean it was spelled ' nupitals ' . Jonathan had to step in , giggling and going,‘Do you realize what you ’re saying ? ' I said , ' Yeah , nupitals . That ’s the word , right ? ' He break , ' Oh , no , no , it ’s nuptials . What are you talking about ? ' So I had to argue with him like , ' No , no , it ’s nupitals .
And Jonathan and I looked at the Book and write it out one letter at a sentence , [ and I was ] like , ' Oh , you ’re right ! ' For dcades , my eye had been visualise the word as nupitals . Do you believe this ? I know . So anyway , it was Frakes , in his good humor , giggly way , that gravel me over that . So once we had the conversation , I did one take after another , and I would slip one’s mind the word ' nupitals ' in by chance event . And we had a big giggle fest over that .
