TheDoomsday Clockcomic eventhas really done it : the stars ofWATCHMENhave joined DC ’s Universe -literally . The upshot promised to do just that from the very beginning , at least on a metaphorical , storytelling scale . Until now the heroes , antiheroes , and villains of the iconicWatchmenseries had a world and story all their own , set on an alternate , doomed Earth . So when writer Geoff Johns induce the estimate tocombine theWatchmencharacters with DC ’s risible universe , few would have predicted that the 1980s vigilantes would tunnel through space and time , and physically set foot into the world of Batman , Superman , and the ease of DC ’s heroes .
That ’s exactly what ’s developed in offspring # 2 ofDoomsday Clockfrom Johns , and artist Gary Frank and Brad Anderson . Havingbrought Rorschach back to lifein the first matter ( recreate by a new vigilante ) , and match him up with Ozymandias to economise their world , the 2nd effect raises the stakes significantly . The enigma ofSuperman ’s connection to thisWatchmensequelhas yet to be solved , but it ’s only a thing of time now that theWatchmencast is walking on DC ’s Earth … and into its Batcave .
The Watchmen Travel To DC’s Universe
As we draft inour brushup ofDoomsday Clock#1 , the tale start seven years after the end of the originalWatchmen . The chess opening Page reveal that the ' original design ' of Ozymandias a.k.a . Adrian Veidt has ultimately failed : globe is once more divided , and on the brink of full atomic war . Adrian Veidt had launched his mission to save the world to prevent that exact outcome . But in Issue # 2 , he fails spectacularly . The nukes flee , and cities are leveled … but he , Rorschach , and two new deplorable recruits are phase out of existence as it all come to an end .
They ’re on board Night Owl ’s celebrated ship ( nicknamed " Archie " ) , and thanks to some quantum tunneling upgrades , they ’re immune to the nuclear devastation . The terminal moments ofWatchmenimplied that Dr. Manhattan was heading out into the mystery story of the cosmos in search of a new world , or even a newfangled universe in which to create"some of his own"life forms . And somewhere between that unmistakable ending andDoomsday Clock , Ozymandias contrive a mode tofollowManhattan into that new universe .
By now , it should surprise no mirthful account book fan that the universe in inquiry - the one travel to by Manhattan - was the DC Comics Universe . But even to two former Minutemen , Earth is a big lieu no matter the universe . To traverse down Manhattan ’s track , they ’ll call for some help .
The World’s Smartest Men
Ask any DC Comics fan who the two most intelligent , most connected , most informed , and mostdiscreetmen in DC ’s world would be , and they ’ll always give you the same name : Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor . And as evidence of the clock time Johns pass crafting this narrative of worlds colliding , subject imbrication , and comparison bringing pellucidity , Ozymandias and Rorschach make up one’s mind to rive up . Because as notable and legendary as their name and deed of conveyance may be to existent - world amusing readers , they ’ve arrived on a new world with an outlandish story … and one of them with their life and brilliance slip away by the minute .
Needless to say , they BOTH get a surprisal on which the issue is left hang .
PAGE 2: Rorschach, Meet The Batman
As Geoff Johns had previously teased while promotingDoomsday Clock , it ’s impossible for Adrian Veidt to resist an understanding and ego as large as his own . Hence , Ozymandias try out Lex Luthor , a megalomaniac intent on saving the world from itself without even the appearing of altruism or generousness . While Rorschach sets his sights on the only DC ikon as grim , as misanthropic , and as chillingly uncompromising as himself ( who can still be called a ' hero ' ) .
And as fans might have predicted , Rorschach has someinterestingthoughts about the genial state reflected by Bruce Wayne ’s Batcave .
Rorschach, Meet The Batman
Ozymandias receives the proceeds ’s biggest shocker whenaWatchmencharacter returns to lifeto menace him and Luthor , but it ’s the meeting of Rorschach and Batman that acts as the issue ’s cliffhanger closing . Rorschach only knows to try out the billionaire Bruce Wayne , in one of the most blazing base in all of Gotham . And proving that tec acquirement in the DCU are a piece less necessary than in theWatchmentimeline , Rorschach stumbles onto the existence of the Batcave within minute ( in a marvellous court to his uncovering of Eddie Blake ’s Comedian unvarying inWatchmen ’s opening pages ) .
He only baffle to peruse the Batcave long enough to note the similarity between Batman ’s collection and those of serial killer , but not just anyone gets to search it unannounced . More surprisingly , Batman ’s arrival is n’t a surprise at all - alternatively , it has the feeling of one detective greeting another . The most rewarding scene will be the one that follow the cliffhanger , as a humankind with little time for fantastic , outlandish narration tries to convert Batman he ’s now a part of one .
And of course , the search that follows , redact Batman on the hunt for Dr. Manhattan ( should Rorschach convince his charge that they share more in rough-cut than a beloved of pancake ) . But then , Batman has been trying to solve the Manhattan mysterysince the first ofRebirth . Perhaps the arrival of Rorschach is the falling out in the case that he ’s been waiting for .
It ’s an resistless flirt for bothWatchmenprotagonists , putting one - and possiblyboth- in life history - or - death situations . The fact that Johns is continuing to unfurl his narrative one chapter at a time , following its own Alan Moore - esque yard only reinforce our piqued peculiarity . There ’s more than one thunderclap dropped in Issue # 2 , and just as many thoughtful allusion and twists . But the riddle at the center of this account - the one that Johns could n’t resist build this tarradiddle around - go forward to bilk .
Thankfully for fans , the unspoiled police detective of TWO different worlds are now on the case .
