Countdown
Countdown relies too heavily on jump scares, but still fails to distract from a gimmicky premise, a poorly developed script and thin characters.
As technology has evolved , so too have the repugnance movies attempting to rap into society ’s technophobia . The most recent tech - reliant horror motion picture isCountdown , author - director Justin Dec ’s feature film - length directorial launching . This PG-13 repulsion - thriller pick up its characters combat an app that call their accurate time of last ; when they change their course of action , it frequent and torture them to death . Bizarrely , and for no apparent reason , the movie also includes a Time ’s Up/#MeToo subplot that tot nothing to the film and is so ill enforce as to be insulting to viewers . Countdownrelies too heavily on jump scare , but still fails to distract from a gimmicky premise , a poorly developed handwriting and thin graphic symbol .
Countdownfollows young nanny Quinn Harris ( Elizabeth Lail ) , who download the app with her coworkers after they get a patient who said his lady friend died exactly when the app predicted . However , while the app tells her coworkers they ’ll live for many years , Quinn only has a few days . Freaked out , she cancels plans with her sister Jordan ( Talitha Bateman ) and their father , only for the app to tell her she dishonor the term and conditions of its user arrangement . Quinn initiate being haunted by a menacing figure and attempts to get a raw speech sound to remove the undeletable app . At the store , she pass into Matt ( Jordan Calloway ) , who ’s also attempting to escape the destiny prefigure by the app . Together , they seek out possible solutions , going to a priest named Father John ( P.J. Byrne ) , who has a theory about what ’s really behind the app . Still , with their time tick down , it remains to be seen if Quinn and Matt can bewilder the Countdown clock or die just as predicted .
While the assumption could have made for an intriguing horror movie , one that examine our reliance on technology and had something to say about furore trends like popular apps , Countdownseems more preoccupy with delivering jump scares - of which there areplenty . There is some give-and-take in the film , mainly had by the characters , about how much control we have over our fate and the fate of others . ButCountdowndoesn’t seem to have anything to say with respect to those themes , it ’s just something to verbalise about in between jump scare . To the film ’s credit , some of its jump scares are genuinely surprising and terrifying , which feel like an accomplishment with its PG-13 rating interdict the use of too much gore or vehemence . But even the flick ’s better jump panic scent up feel more manipulative than anything else , specially since that ’s where all ofCountdown’shorror comes from .
To make matters worse , Countdowndoesn’t seem to give care much about its character unless it ’s torturing them . Any and all growth comes as a means of explaining certain story choices , like why Matt ’s being haunted by a little boy ( the picture show meet flying and loose with its own intimate logic about what forms the hauntings take ) . But the most gross character arc has to be the one imply Quinn and her supervisory program , Dr. Sullivan ( Peter Facinelli ) . It ’s seemingly meant to be a timely inclusion of a male superior sexually assaulting his distaff Jr , but the fact alone that the assault and its consequence act second - violin to a cause of death app would be laughable , if it did n’t make illumination of a very serious exit . And that ’s to say nothing of the fact that Dec ’s script and directing is utterly incompetent in actually handling the intimate ravishment with any form of thought or sensitivity . tally contumely to harm , Countdownalso manages to include what has to be the worst use of"Time ’s up"in a handwriting since the movement launch .
at last , Countdownhas footling to offer the magnanimous lexicon of technical school - base repugnance movies , apart from proving once again that a gimmicky , relevant premise does n’t of necessity secure success . The script is lacking , Dec ’s directing is serviceable but uninspired , and the characters are abominably developing . The one undivided highlight ofCountdownis a line delivered by Calloway ’s Matt , but even that feels out of place since it negate a much good horror flick , which perhapsCountdowncould have been in someone else ’s hands .
TV audience interested in the assumption ofCountdowncan bound off this one ; the motion picture might technically be about a orca app , but it ’s really a generic trace / demon repulsion news report . There ’s no real test of the engineering or how it can be used to terrorise people . Viewers attend for a schlocky ( but not in the fun room ) horror movie filled with jump scares might be satisfied byCountdown , but the scares grow ho-hum at times and the movie in between scare is downright boring . With mickle of horror moving-picture show out for the Halloween season , there ’s obligate to be something chilling , or at the very least , more entertaining thanCountdownat the theater .
