When I first saw the dawdler forConstantineI thought the concept of a character devoted to destroying wickedness , but who was too corrupt for heaven was an intriguing idea … however , the cartoon - like CGI demons set off my alarm system bells . Now that I ’ve seen the picture , after two hours I find myself wish well the visuals had been theonlydeficiency .
For my money , the idea ofConstantineis its greatest asset . Because it had such great potential , it?s poor execution is induce for even big dashing hopes . Movies that tackle important subjects like " the import of lifetime " , " the reason for evil " , and " the after - life " can do one to reflect on a panorama , a one - liner , or a captivating optic effect for month , even years later . unluckily you?ll be forget about this one on the way back to your motorcar ?
The secret plan also had real promise : A man with paranormal world power , fight to deliver himself to God and find oneself meaning for Mankind?s very beingness , stumbles upon a fiendish plot to upset the balance of good and immorality on earth . sound good so far , huh ?

That?s what I was thinking 30 minute into it .
The problem is that the various elements are not fetch together in a coherent and cohesive story one can reasonably follow . For example , unobserved spirits suddenly club one case to death . This is theonlypoint in the moving picture where they have such incredible " direct " king . Why ? ! I can concoct a reason why they might , but should n’t the movie tell the flippin ? story ?
as bewildering is the subplot where an incredible evilness is travel from Mexico ( ! ? ) , where a homeless piece accidentally discovers the said fishgig in a hollow in the earth , wrapped in a Nazi flag . My mind could not process how or why :
A. Nazis would be in monomania of the spear ( except for , you know , Nazis arebad ) .
B. They would go transatlantic and hide it in Mexico .
The looming threat of this seemingly indestructible immorality adds suspense and excitement , but its slaying creates more inconsistency and confusion .
The performing was a non - factor . No one was so bad as to break my immersion into the film , however , no performance specially stick out out either . In go for a morose feel , many of the characters total across as just being old-hat … which form of worked in reality ! The characters thatdidshatter my immersion were the virtual ones . There was one redeeming FX scene , however : A mass of worm possessed by a daemon form a humanoid creature to attack Constantine . Nice extra burden , but a bank note to the director : Crabs are not really insects , and where the heck did they follow from anyway ? !
And finally , why did Satan seem as a middle - aged disco turn down with muddy feet ? Did he have a dead body from an earlier scene ? This had me lose ( and express mirth ) , but here , as in the rest of the picture , there was almost enough activity to take my mind off such messy footling thing as eubstance and cohesiveness .
