In my opinion , the fact that this advance a bunch of Academy Awards ( including Best Picture ) is the most good bill of indictment of Hollywood I can recall of … but I digress .
If I had n’t been planning on reviewing this picture show , I would have sour it off about 15 min in . I was sitting there wondering who incisively I ’m supposed to be rootle for … Roxie ( Renee Zellweger ) ? That was the closest person I could come up with and she surely did not fit the bill . I mean at first , certain … wide - eyed fledgling to the big city trying to make it in show biz ( never try that story before ) , shoots abusive guy who just need to get down her pants .
Ah , but then … her clueless married man deal the rap mentation she shot a burglar . As he sits there confessing , her mind wanders off to a musical leg reading of what ’s happpening in front of her , with her as the star ( of grade ) . Nevermind that her husband is throw himself on a grenade for her . He before long figures out she was sleeping with the guy and Roxie accuseshimof being unfaithful .
She goes to jail and retrieve herself at the bottom of the totem pole . Hires famous attorney ( Richard Gere ) , gets famous in the paper , then treat Velma ( Catherine Zeta - Jones ) the same way she ( Roxie ) was treated , which was rotten , when the tables are turned .
Just a really likable character .
Her husband tries to support her by paying for the attorney and thinking that he is the father of her kid even though they had n’t had sex in many more months than would have made the math work out . Throughout this every individual affair that happens is turned into a selfish fantasy on her part .
Is she free ? No . Is she misunderstood ? No . Is she a selfish , ego - involved , sociopath ? Yes .
In my mind , it is quite clear why this movie struck a ( positive ) nerve with the Academy : It ’s what they ’re all about . Fame and success at any toll , morality and ethical motive … what are those ? Just stumble blocks to be subdue to get what they want . It ’s all about me , me , me , and the hell with you .
The no-good part is that in the ending she gets what she wants , and is in fact glorified for how she arrived there .
These are the mass making moral dictum against the current political science and resist the warfare . Yeah , whatever . Your word carriessomuch weightiness .
Sure , it was well - photographed and as a musical comedy on flick it succeed at least to a point . About 3/4 of the agency through I started tight - forwarding through the musical sequences . But so what ? I ’m certain someone out there could grapple to make a technically well - made film glorifying pedophiles , but would that still make it suitable of a Best Picture honor ? Oh expect , Roman Polanski did get best director for The Pianist , so I theorize a movie like that probably would get an laurels . naysayer would just be call " closed in - disposed " , " uninformed " , or oh yeah their favorite : " Bigots " .
On a final note , considering the mental object of this photographic film : thinly veiled sexuality , slaying , unfaithfulness , etc . , I was knocked out to see that it was rated PG-13 . Yeah , great stuff to have your teenager watch .
