Unlikable characters, pretentious writing and misguided direction make this movie a total mess from start to finish.
The history is set in ( where else ? ) Los Angeles . Jake Scully ( played by Craig Wasson ) is a struggling worker . Jake is also extremely claustrophobic ; his entire body immobilize up when he ’s in a confine space . That causes all sorts of problems when Jake is cast as a lamia in a barn - movie and ca n’t blast his coffin scenes . After he messes up take after take , the conductor ( played by Dennis Franz ) sends him home and ends up be sick a different actor in the purpose . To make matters worse , Jake arrives home only to find his lady friend in bed with another man . have chore and char bother , Jake drowns his sorrows in booze and playacting class . deplorably , even the acting class are n’t enough to photograph Jake out of his downward helix ; his overpowering fear is preventing him from achieving his straight potential as an doer . But all is not lost ; a mysterious beau by the name of Sam Bouchard ( played by Gregg Henry ) befriend Jake and help to pull him out of the proverbial toilet .

Jake pursues the Indian , but he ultimately gets away . It ’s at this tip that we learn that the woman ’s name is Gloria Revelle ( played by Deborah Shelton ) . quicker than you may say " totally unrealistic , " Gloria and Jake exchange a tenacious kiss desirable of a soap opera , and Gloria runs off .

All throughout the movie , it is obvious that Brian DePalma want to be that generation ’s Alfred Hitchcock . It has been aver that impersonation is the sincere descriptor of flattery , but I doubt whether Hitchcock would be flatter by this picture show . Many of the scenes feel like they ’re ripped off from Hitchcock classics , especiallyRear WindowandVertigo . While Hitchcock went for shivery , DePalma live on for gory . While Hitchcock run for challenging , DePalma goes for lurid . The movie sample to redeem itself during the finale , but it in the end falls completely flat . I ’m trying to cerebrate of a unmarried thing this picture did in good order , and away from a few genuinely suspenseful view , I really ca n’t think of anything . Most of the necessary elements to make a good movie are there , but they ’re thrown together in such a disconnected and ostentatious means that it ’s far more thwarting than entertaining .
So is this motion picture worth seeing ? Quite honestly , I ca n’t think of anyone for whom the result is yes . Not one individual character reference in the pic is likable ; all of them are either moron , jolt or both . The storyline roll around an player ’s conflict to bring home the bacon in the business , as well as the grownup film industriousness . I could n’t care less about either field of study , so how was I presuppose to revel the movie ? The lead character , Jake , is a pervert , a weirdy and a cretin .
